Dara Altman helped build the industry? She had nothing to do with XM until Hugh Panero brought her in 2 yars ago. She was a lawyer for Discovery and HBO. I think the only thing she ever did was to spend the company's money decorating her office and worried about the interior decoration of the XM lunch room.

It's nice to see that there are no "Mel's Men" but that the only one from XM is someone who did nothing more than spend money for her own good. I'll bet that she is fired in less than a year - but it will be called a resignation for personal reasons.

By the way - What the hell is a Chief Administrative Officer? Is that someone who fetches coffee for the people who actually have real jobs? Just wondering.

Everyone just PRAY to your own personal diety that Mel keeps Tony Massiello, head of all XM things technical, along with his crack engineering team of Ed Schwartz, Jaime Colon, etc. Otherwise, what WAS the XM as we once knew it will be relegated to the lowest common denominator...aka Sirius.

Now...when it comes to replacing sports people, hopefully Mel's side of the operation can evict some really incompetent XM folks on the MLB channel, one in particular who is a real DICK man!

Yeah, sespool - I'll just sit back and watch Melvin (get your boss' name right) Karmazin take Sirius XM right to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court Clerk's office when the company defaults on its junk paper.

But one thing you have to remember - not everyone works for the NAB that disagrees with what has happened. Some of us just think this whole thing is a joke. By the way, MK is doing a great job - two new 4 year lows on the stock price in one day. Priceless.

Some here like sespool are too ignorant to figure out just because subscribers don't all subscribe to Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin "merge" MONOPOLY scheme, liked our satradio like we had:

liked that the industry was stronger with 2 companies,
liked the direct competition between at least 2 satradio companies,
could see that Sirius and XM were stronger being two companies than this "merge" scheme.

Nothing you can say sespool takes away the FACT that since Mel, since Howard Sirius's market worth has dropped by at least half and continues to free fall.

No the MAJORITY of subscribers against "merge" schemes are not NAB, we are EDUCATED consumers which see through Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin "merge" MONOPOLY scheme spin, but unlike the blind and ignorant we're well aware the promise of satradio is GONE.

It's painfully obvious the blind and ignorant DONT GET IT, and they prove it with each post that they DONT GET IT. By the way don't "dislike" Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin, just don't like the spin job of "merge" MONOPOLY scheme's and the way the sat industry has been heading since he came on board.

The only propaganda on this board are the pro-Mel and consolidation posts. Please remember that both companies that merged have been in business for well over a decade. Neither company alone, nor the single merged company is in a position to make money. Sure, the revenues are there, but the costs swamp the revenues. Look at it this way, the $700M at 13% requires debt servicing of $91M per year. Prior to the announcement of the merger, that wasn't a cost figured into the synergy savings. That amount doesn't include the 10% interest rate on the $400M, an added $4M per year.

The RIAA fees aren't going to change much because the fees payable are calculated on revenue, and nothing else. Sure, the company is going to layoff lots of folks. To tell you the truth, I am fine with that - a money losing company should cut its costs.

On the retail front, there will be a huge slowdown in already anemic sales because the existing receivers are not capable of receiving the new programming. Why would a consumer buy old technology knowing that new technology is on the way?

What about the car customers? The radios in those vehicles, like the retail models, aren't capable of receiving the enhanced service. With a combined retention/conversion rate of somewhere around 50%, that's a lot of money being thrown out for low attachment. Remember, GM and Honda are on the new Board. The cars that are selling well for Honda have limited satellite radio attachment and appeal for the customers. Let's look at Toyota, their scion brand, just like the new Cadillacs from GM come with i-Pod ports.

You may disagree, but there are a lot of upfront costs for the company to get its radios installed into the cars. The result is that the full in cost is huge. Sirius has never reported CPGA - the all in cost. I bet they continue that model because if they start now, people will really appreciate how expensive Sirius installs are.

Now, with those costs in, and only a 50% retention/conversion rate, the SAC for an OEM has to be somewhere in the range that it requires about 3.5 years for the company to make any money on the service from the customers who decide to keep it, because those customers have to absorb the costs associated with the sold-but not activated :SBNA" radios (those that do not convert to self-paying subs).

Look, I love my satellite radio. I'm crazy enough to always keep it. But I'm maniacal about it. However, I believe that I am the exception. Want proof? Go to an Apple store and look at the crowd there. Compare that to the crowd at CC and BB stores (excluding those surrounding the Apple section). The silence will be deafening.
