Sirius XM selected as one of World's Most Influential Companies

The Foxxhole on Sirius XMSirius XM Radio Inc. has been selected by BusinessWeek as one of its "World's Most Influential Companies" for 2008.
Standing alongside other behemoths such as WalMart, Microsoft, News Corp, Facebook, and Apple, Sirius XM was selected to be part of the list because it remains as the sole provider of satellite radio.

"The merger is an interesting case for law students because it shows how struggling rivals may be given the latitude to create a monopoly until new technologies catch on among consumers," the article writes.

"Of course, if the market definition is broadened to include music for businesses, Sirius XM (SIRI) competes with Muzak; if the market is defined as all radio listeners, it has countless competitors."

I personally take issue with the above statement, simply because there is no "if" - that's exactly what happened. The DOJ did broaden the market definition, so it's is not a monopoly, and Sirius XM does compete with all of radio.

My problem is that the merger was the only reason that BusinessWeek could come up with for Sirius XM to be considered "influential." So... what does that mean for 2009?

MUZAK.(lol) You got to be kidding, Right?

They have certainly influenced my bank account, that's for damn sure!

That award from Business Week will sure look pretty stapled to Sirius/XM's bankruptcy filing.

The newly-combined entity can certainly be pointed to as an example of how NOT to conduct a merger. Let's see if the upcoming Chapter 11 and inevitable Chapter 7 are conducted in a more orderly fashion...

"Most influential company on the PENNY STOCK market" maybe...influential in taking $20 a month and giving me a watered down O&A show maybe...but infuential beyond that, I doubt it.

This will probably be the rationale for the govt to allow Ford to take over GM and Chrysler in a couple of years.

SiriusXM might just be the "Worlds most influential company" showing how a anti-consumer, anti-industry "merge" MONOPOLY scheme completely killed off the whole industry. We started out 2008 with TWO satradio companies finished 2008 with only ONE satradio company. Sometime in 2009 there will be NONE.

I agree with this article. You can not always look at Sirius Xm from a financial viewpoint. Think of how many people listen to this product and with the lack of sensoring and other content they bring nationwide that you will not get from one single other source, they are a powerhouse. Wether they restructure or not this product is here to stay. In the long term it will become a behemoth like television.

They certainly had a great influence on Hartlieb- he gets his 15 minutes of fame.

In the meantime, with GM trading at price levels not seen since 1947, you have to laugh at the geniuses complaining about the stock price OF SIRI.

Wake up morons- all retail is DEAD.

I have it from an inside source that SIRI will pay cash for the FEB debt. The stock will climb to .50-1.00; refinancing will get done; with the threat of no BK the naked shorts will get killed; Obama's newe SEC chief will outlaw naked shorting; SIRI 2009 sales will exceed expectations; You can take it from there. And the NABBIE's will try another approach to kill their biggest non-competitor.
