Slacker PortableGearlog is reporting that personalized music service Slacker is now taking pre-orders for the much-desired Slacker Portable.

Unfortunately, at this time, I can't seem to find evidence of this anywhere on Slacker's website. Their products page is still showing the Slacker Portable as "coming soon."

UPDATE: The pre-order page is now live. Check it out here.

My guess is that Gearlog got a press release pre-pitched and posted ahead of time, because they're providing more details than I've seen to date and they mention a press release as the source (with no such press release shown on Slacker's website). So with that in mind, here's a rundown of some of the details:

  • The Slacker Portable will come in in 15, 25 and 40 station capacities - which correspond with the 2gb, 4gb and 8gb versions we all learned about back when Slacker was first announced (no 120gb version, which seemed like a stretch anyway)
  • Will enjoy 10 hours of playtime
  • Features a removable battery
  • Pre-order in the U.S. with a scheduled to ship date of December 13th, 2007 (or earlier)
  • MSRP Price is $199.99 (15 stations, 2GB), $249.99 (25 stations, 4GB ) and $299.99 (40 stations, 8GB)

No word on the Slacker Satellite Car Kit...

Thanks Jim!

Does anyone think this will be out the door by Dec. 31st?

Did you even read the article? Says Dec 13 right there.

I know it says Dec 13th, I was commenting more on if you think it'll be delayed?

why do i think this thing is going to be saddled with so many restrictions and such a limitation on song selection thanks to the RIAA Et.All......

if they dont let you skip more then 6 songs like the web site currently limits you then this product is dead out the door.

it will be fun in the first week when the 8gb of music is hacked

PNess, thats the thing about this player, the SERVICE is free and comes bundled with the player. However, you can only skip 6 songs per hour, if you want to skip more songs per hour, then you shell out a bit more per month. I think its a neat take on the whole subscription model. Thats why a lot of people dont give SAT radio as a gift, cause, they feel guilty "gifting" them another bill.

Hey all; I did post this news a bit early, with Slacker's full permission. I believe you should be able to pre-order today, though. Thanks for the link.

I don't expect this to be an iPod killer, or even a Zune killer. But i really think the Slacker portable is really just touching upon a different segment of the market. I have been using the slacker web player since it's release in March and have to say if the hardware is upto par with the software then they will have a great combo. Also noted that if they can get the third party support then i think they will have a good following. Slacker also stated that it would not be affected by the recent internet radio royalty price hikes (for now). 10 more days, and we'll let the reviews come rolling in. Also check out http://www.slackersocial.com Seems to be a good start to a social backing. I'll try to post an unboxing and complete review as soon as it arrives.
