Sponsors pull advertising over O&A suspension

Opie and Anthony Sponsors of the XM Satellite Radio channel The Virus (ch 202) are reportedly pulling their advertising from the channel in protest to the Opie and Anthony suspension.

The Nashville Coffee Company, a sponsor of both The Virus and Radio Disney (ch 115), even goes as far as to issue a statement on their website regarding the matter.

"It is apparent that XM Radio is beholden to crybaby special interest groups who cannot separate humor from reality," the company said on its website. "It is also unfortunate that XM Radio executives don't have the guts to stand up for their on air talent."

Other advertisers, such as Adameve.com, are reportedly pulling their sponsorship if O&A are not reinstated.

"As an adult company with a long history of fighting for our First Amendment rights, freedom of speech issues are extremely important to Adameve.com.," wrote an Adameve.com representative  in a letter to People Against Censorship.

This level of pressure, combined with the enormous XM subscriber backlash, may weigh in XM reconsidering the suspension decision. XM has always said they want to appeal to "cult" audiences. Well... they got 'em.

ZERO POINT ZERO

My 2˘:

To whom it may concern,

I contacted customer service this afternoon, and was directed to email this address, in order to convey my opinion on XM Radio's recent decision to suspend the Opie and Anthony show for 30 days.

First, I would like you to know that I removed 2 of the 4 radios from my account, because of the ridiculous and unwarranted action taken by your company, against what I consider the most entertaining and original show on the entire XM platform.

I would also like you to understand that I will be canceling my entire account, if Opie and Anthony are ultimately fired. I can think of better ways to spend nearly $400 a year, if I'm not going to getting the level of entertaining programming that I've come to expect from you.

I do not care if you have a merger with Sirius hanging in the balance. I do not care if an off-the-cuff comment made in jest, on a comedy talk show, potentially annoys some politicians that stand in the way of that pending merger. And more than anything, I do not care if these comments miffed some executives, escalating a behind-the-scenes pissing match with management! Personally, I would prefer if such a merger were to be blocked, if this is any example of how a single satellite radio company can be expected to behave, absolutely disregarding the wishes of its customers.

Up until this point, I held XM Radio in very high regard, because you always seemed to place the needs of your customers very high. I appreciated your unique music and talk programming so much that I have recommended your service to countless friends and family. If I can no longer expect different and 'edgy' programming from XM (or XM+Sirius), you do not offer much else, besides music, that entices me to continue as a subscriber.

If music and unoriginal and uninspired talk programming is all I have to look forward to, in exchange for $33.00 every month, I think I would prefer to cancel all of radios and spend those entertainment dollars elsewhere. If Opie and Anthony are fired, I will be happy to purchase a new MP3 player in place of my Pioneer Inno, and subscribe to a service such as Yahoo! Music Unlimited music. An MP3 subscription service would cost much less than satellite radio, while still providing me with the wide variety of music that I've become accustomed to.

As a happy and loyal subscriber for over 3 ˝ years, I truly hope that you do not lose your way, and are no longer the type of entertainment company that attracted me to you in the first place. Do not become "just" another radio company, providing watered-down talk and music programming. I can get that type of entertainment anywhere, from any number of sources. The thing that attracted me to XM from the beginning was the fact that you truly provided something "different". Opie and Anthony are not for everyone, obviously. However, their brand of radio is "different", and there is a market and proper place for this type of show.

Please continue to value your customers, and do not lose sight of what we want. Keep their tastes and interests at heart, when merging with Sirius. Continue to be that company that offers something "different", and I will continue to be a subscriber for years to come.

Bring the Opie and Anthony show back on the air!

Sincerely,
-----

Where did Wackbag get this info that O&A were getting fired? It seems that the opposite is going to happen and XM is going to get O&A back on the air. Those idiots that smashed their radios are feeling pretty stupid around now. You should have just cancelled your subscription you idiots!

i dont think that many dirched their radios--I do see XM re-instating them earlier--Why they suspended them and cbs didnt(?) doesnt make sense, other then the merger

Jorge, you can blame Zagman, who seems to have shit in the proverbial corn flakes that is wackbag with some source that isn't an XM employee/family of employee.

He really angers me.

"It is apparent that XM Radio is beholden to crybaby special interest groups who cannot separate humor from reality,"
--------------------
a.k.a. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.

Zagman is a fucking idiot then. Cancel your subscriptions and it will make a big impact with that alone. Smashing a radio will make XM more money because those idiots will have to buy another radio when they come back. If they were fired, then smash away! I'm a Stern fan and I'm pulling for you guys, but sometimes you guys make yourselves look really stupid.

Love 'em or hate 'em, Opie & Anthony fans are passionate and loyal, at times to a fault.
I doubt very much that Howard's fans would get behind him to this degree if he were in trouble.

I have to agree that the radio smashing was one step beyond what I'm willing to do - the best revenge, IMO, would be selling the units and putting that money back in one's pocket.

I do not listen to O&A on any regular basis, however I want them as an option. I have "suspended" My service for one month or untill O&A are back on the air.

Bottom line is not about O&A+jimmy

Bottom line is that if O&A are censored the so will all the other channels. I want to hear Buck Cherry's "Crazy Bitch" without hearing "Bleep ... Bleep bleeep"

This is not only about O&A, its about putting a gag on people who are on a Private Pay Service. This is not acceptable.

This is beyond a Stern vs O&A thing. This is about free speech now. And for the record, I'm a Stern fan and a Sirius subscriber.

Bravo to the sponsors who see this. I will support them by giving them my business even though I don't even listen to XM.

Hope others will do the same.

First off, good for Nashville Coffee Company and AdamEve.com for pulling their spots...Who would've thought a company (NCC) that advertises on Radio Disney would have supported O&A...I may have to try their coffee simply in support of the move. Good to see some advertisers with balls.

I too believe O&A will be reinstated early...Not only is sponsors pulling ads not good for XM, it'll probably hurt Ron and Fez as well since their show is on the same channel. I'm guessing if they're not back next week, O&A will be back by the day after Memorial Day.

And to Gary who asked why they weren't suspended by CBS...Simple; the comments didn't air on terrestrial radio. The supposed mocking of their apology DID air on both terrestrial and XM, but they didn't say anything that violated FCC guidelines, and apparently didn't say anything that made CBS execs mad...So CBS would have had even less reason to suspend them.

Haven't talked about the Dopie and Imfamy debacle anywhere yet... but I found this little blog and decided to add my 2 cents (for what their worth...after inflation of course).

First of all, I don't see how anyone can see this as a censorship issue. Rather this is a case of Free Speech working the way it is supposed to.

You can't have Freedom without Responsibility. That's not what this country is about. Contrary to the hedonistic, "if-it-feels-good-do-it" mentality that seems to be popular amongst my Loser Generation (I'm 28), if you put Crap out there...you SHOULD be called on it.

That's exactly what happened here. This isn't censorship of any kind. The Government is not stepping in and jailing Dopie and Infamy for speaking. Rather, the public is calling them out for spewing Garbage.

There are consequences to everything we choose to do. That's why true Freedom works. We are free to do and say anything we please... but not without consequences.

Even if you consider the idiotic, mind-numbing filth they create to be "Humor", you must admit they went too far this time (and not for the first time). They deserve to be called out and face the consequences. Period.

That's all I really have to say about that... other than, it will be interesting to see Liberal Hypocrisy in action. Most likely, those same voices who condemned that idiot Imus will be championing the "Free Speech" of Dopie and Infamy.

"I doubt very much that Howard's fans would get behind him to this degree if he were in trouble."

guess you don't remember snapple huh?

they support him, vote sanvagina....

thus idol ratings are down 3 weeks straight and house tied them two weeks ago and they beat them last week.

now that is support

"Why they suspended them and cbs didnt(?) doesnt make sense, other then the merger

Posted by: gary | May 17, 2007 10:28 AM"

The incident happened on XM and not CBS. That is why CBS didnt suspend them. If that doesnt make sense to you then you are beyond help.

O&A have a ZERO point ZERO rating

Anthony Cumia looks like a 70 year old. He is older than Howard Stern.

they weren't suspended for what they said with homeless charlie, they were suspended because of their onair comments on monday following the appology. they basically bashed XM's rules for *forcing* them to issue an apology and got suspended for it. They should realize that XM is in a tough situation due to the merger/political pressure and be an UNDERSTANDING EMPLOYEE and collect their paychecks and move on.

>guess you don't remember snapple huh?

Snapple's doing just fine

>they support him, vote sanvagina....

Sanjayia's gone

>thus idol ratings are down 3 weeks straight and house tied them two weeks ago and they beat them last week.

Ratings are down due to sub-par talent this season.

"People against censorship"?
So they dont think anything should be censored right? So you should be able to have sex with animals on the radio? These people are anarchists. They dont believe in laws or rules. Face the facts eggheads, there is a need for censorship to a certain degree. Threatening to rape or assault government officials is a crime. If you dont think it is, then maybe you need to open a law book.

HumbleOpinion wrote: "Rather, the public is calling them out for spewing Garbage."

Um, what public ? Other than people seeking face-time on the news channels I'm not hearing any outcry or seeing any marches in the streets.

first, it is seldom at best that a radio show who has been suspended is not ultimately fired. Additionally Zagman has connections to people closer to this than I do, so while I hope he is wrong, I will respect his opinion.

second, destroying a radio serves several purposes. It will guarantee that XM will NEVER make another dime on that radio. Additionally it demonstrates to normal well adjusted people how important this decision is. (I have not destroyed mine, yet)

Every broadcast company in america is watching this, because for the first time that I am aware of, the listeners hold more weight that the advertisers (who also are affected by special interest groups)

I personally have canceled my measly little subscription, had at least 6 other subscriptions cancelled by friends who do not even listen or like OnA.

This is about demonstrating that there are a LOT of people who do not want to be censored. There may be a day when political talk hosts are not allowed to voice their opinion, because it conflicts with what the broadcasting company believes.

And howie fans, to each their own but this decision WILL affect how much freedom howie will have to do his show in the future.

Looks like this pulling advertising thing works both ways. Now XM will see what happens when such efforts actually represent the opinion of the majority.

If there's one thing I'm enjoying during this debacle it's seeing the airing of the absolute worthlessness of most of the Stern fans that post here.

Hi there Jorge and Brian, as a wackbag mod I can assure you that our source is very, very reliable. One can only hope that XM changes their minds in the next 28 days.

As for those smashing their units, I'm sure as hell not breaking mine, I'm selling it for money.

money > funny youtube video

HumbleOpinion - I'm willing to bet you don't listen to O&A. Why would you be outraged if you don't listen? Shouldn't you be outraged at whoever exposed you to the 30 second clip?

Would you like to justify your outrage by posting exactly what O&A did that was so outrageous? Oh and please use actual quotes from the show when describing your outrage and not the crap the media has been running.

Thanks and I look forward to your reply.

>>Um, what public ? Other than people seeking face-time on the news channels I'm not hearing any outcry or seeing any marches in the streets. >>

Probably because the marketshare for satellite radio is pretty miniscule by comparison as it is - take away a hugely popular program on HBO or Showtime because some special interest group objected to its content, and watch how many people cancel their subscriptions to those channels...

The outrage has to start somewhere, though...

Caller "Homeless Charlie": I tell you what. What's the George Bush bitch? Condolleezza Rice? I'd f*ck that b*tch. I'd like to f*ck that b*tch dead.

Hosts: (Uproarious laughter.)

She needs a f*cking man.

Host: Yeah.

Charlie: I'd f*ck that bitch (inaudible).

Host: I just imagine the horror in Condolleezza Rice's face when she realizes what's going on.

Host 2: As you were just holding her down and f*cking her.

Charlie: (Cackling).

Charlie: Punch her in the f*cking face. "Shut up, B*TCH!"

Host 1: (Laughing hysterically.)

Host 2: That's exactly what I meant.

Charlie: Just, you know, f*ck her. And George Bush wife? I'd f*ck that b*tch to death.

Host 1: Yeah?

Charlie: Oh, yeah. She needs a man.

Host: You digging her? "Hey, woman! Hey woman! I'll show you a real man!"

Charlie: I love them old b*tches.

Host: "Why don't you come by my box, I'll show you a real man!"

Seems to me it speaks for itself. Thankfully we still live in a civillized society and you can't just get away with saying and airing that kind of filth without facing any consequences.

trojan droped their ads from their free fm joke i mean show due to content.the fans feel they were let go for the coments made last week and that greg and tony should say and do what they want.well the people that run xm can do and say what they want also.and they did and they made my week much more enjoyable.

Wes Derby, your logic is so messed up, I don't know where to begin. Why do you hate them so much?

their "speech" didn't hurt anyone, it was humor. If you don't like vulgar humor then don't listen. It is an Explicit Language channel.

If people were offended, they would stop listening, and ratings would go down, and the show canceled. What is this responsibility that you are meowing about. No one was hurt by what they said.

As for censorship, do you want your broadcasters influencing it on air hosts? Do you want Fox to tell Sean Hannity that he cannot talk about a subject, because it will enrage a environmental group?

This IS about censorship. They said what they said, and they will have people like you who do not like it, and would loose you as a listener. People are canceling because we were aware of the explicit language, and that is what we are paying for.

Sorry I missed a few words there. hehe. There were more than I thought. ;-)

Anyway... I believe they were actually suspended because they mocked company policy in a less than sincere "apology".

Should not a Private Company have the right to discipline it's employees?

sternfan73:
If you are going to post, please use proper punctuation. Capital letters at the beginning of sentences, spaces after periods. You're making yourself look silly and uneducated.

Just ordered a pound of Nashville Kona Blend. I'll support companies that listen to their consumers.

sternfan73:

um cody. when making a point about cenorship and on air hosts. its not the bset thing to use fox news as an example.

if they did the right thing on monday ,
they would of been on xm this morning

Hey Humble Opinion I have a question for you

Who are YOU to tell ME what I can and cant PAY to listen too? I PAY XM money to hear this stuff. This is not on regular "anywne can come across and hear it" radio.

So dont act like your "the public speaking out" or the "Marketplace". IM THE MARKETPLACE!!!! and your just an outsider who is acting like your more important then you are.

mFp

Cody, I'm glad you and your friends are cancelling your subscription, but breaking the units will make XM more money. I know that it will guarantee that XM will never make another dime on those specific radios but when O&A come back, those idiots that smashed their radios(that made asses of themselves on youtube.com) will have to buy another unit. Breaking the units would be a perfect and smart move if O&A were actually fired, but they weren't

"if they did the right thing on monday ,
they would of been on xm this morning"

sternfan73: what did they do wrong on monday. I don't see a problem with the audio that has been posted. They didn't bring up "hey remember last week when homeless charlie was in here...". What they said is the same as they've been saying for a month since this Imus and some nappy headed hos hit the news.

And Cody, I think you got the wrong guy. Wes Derby is actually supporting O&A.

HumbleOpinion - thanks for posting nothing more than the clip I was talking about.

Here is what you missed right after that

Charlie: What am I for?

Bill: Yeah you're like fuck everything - what are you for? What do you advocate?

Charlie: I advocate freedom. Say what you want. Do what you want as long as you aint hurtin nobody. This fuckin country has turned into a bunch of pussies.

I cancelled my 3 accounts and i did not break my radios BUT I dont think breaking radios is a bad idea. THis is because the image of a sub breaking their radio is a big attention getter and thats what the press eats up. So it serves a purpose.

As for XM making money, XM is a SatRad provider. They do not make the radios. Pioneer, Delphi, Samsung and Audiovox make the recievers. XM doesnt make money off of the reciver sale. Only the SUB.

I ordered some coffee with the money I was refunded for my XM sub. Might as well spend it somewhere...

Wes Derby, I apologize, that comment was meant for [not so]HumbleOpinion

And I do see the point of if we break radios, we will just have to buy new ones, but is that nott true of activation fees after a cancellation too? I am not advocating that everyone go out and break theirs, but I believe that it does provide a certain "flare" to our cause. I wonder in the race to get as many subs as they can if they are selling them at much of a profit? I dont know, maybe it is like M$ is doing with the XB360

And I choose fox news, because they are the most controversial "real" news organization that I can think of and Mr. [not so]HumbleOpinion seems to be leaning pretty far to the right.

Politically, this is a "middle of the road" rant, because neither Democrats nor Republicans have a leg to stand on with this one.

If you are conservative, FO! The conservatives have already ruined regular radio with this "Family decency" bullshit that the FCC is full of. Has anyone heard the UNFUNNY CRAP that radio has to offer?

If you are liberal, FO! The liberals have ruined corporate America with fear of any special interest group that may be "OUTRAGED" any time something politically incorrect comes across the air.

My point is that I don’t care if you Like Rush Limbaugh, Al Franken, Opie and Anthony, or George Carlin, it doesn’t matter, none of them should be censored. Listen to what you want, it is in our constitution.

Why do the Stern Zombies beat the Zero-Point-Zero thing into the ground. They had a technical 0.0 in one market... Which is more markets that Stern has.

When someone uses the same single talking point over and over again, it means that the have nothing better to argue with...

When the special interest go after Stern and succeed at the their mission against Bubba, you might change your tune. The sad part is, the People Against Censorshi will welcome you and will help... in spit of your cult tunnell vision.

Hell, O&A hated JV and Elvis, but the O&A fans still stuck up for them. I guess Stern fans are a different class of listeners.

So, HumbleOpinion, are you one of these dopes, similar to the founder of the Guardian Angels who was on Hannity and Colmes last night, who thinks satellite radio should have the same restrictions put on it as terrestrial radio? I ask because your comments, to me, make you like like you might be one of those backward types...No offense, of course.

Good to see the suspension apparently doesn't FULLY extend to Jim Norton. We happened to have the XM on in the car last night, and for the first time in a long time, I actually heard some of Norton's material on XM Comedy. In a way, I'm almost surprised XM didn't stoop to the level of banning him from being played on XM Comedy during the suspension, since he is a regular part of the show.

Off to order some Nashville Coffee. :)

it not in our constitution.
you can go down to your corner and tell the world your problems but the world doesn't own xm .

>> you know stern was suspended for advertising

The reason CBS suspended Stern was because Howard was basically giving hours and hours of *free* advertising time for Sirius - something execs take VERY seriously and obviously frown on.

It would be bad enough if Howard was just endlessly plugging Dell computers (or whatever) and they weren't a show sponsor - not only was Sirius NOT a sponsor of the show but they were a DIRECT COMPETITOR to CBS & all other terrestrial radio stations Howard broadcasted on!

"not only was Sirius NOT a sponsor of the show but they were a DIRECT COMPETITOR to CBS & all other terrestrial radio stations Howard broadcasted on!"

WAIT HOLD THE PRESSES....

this same industry that swares its not a direct competitor to Sat Radio????

so what they did then is hire a singer
then two guys that do a radio show
on XM.

>> this same industry that swares its not a direct competitor to Sat Radio???? >>

'swares'..?

Hey, I never said terrestrial radio wasn't run by a bunch of morons, I'm just stating the facts about what went down. ;-)

XM censors whoever they want to but the boyyyz arent powerful enough to say fuck you. And I don't thin all 35k subs gone wont bother them since their getting rid of a contract which is probably worth more than what it brings in.

Freedom of Speech and censorship issues are about government intervention, not about a private company's decisions based on what it determines are best for it's success. O&A's broadcast is essentially "speaking" for XM, which has a right to decide what it "says".

waterwagen I agree with your point that XM believes that OnA are speaking for them, and THAT is what I have a problem with.

I do not believe that uncensored and explicit channels with on air personalities should be censored by their employer telling them not to talk about things. XM choose to get involved, which has ultimately lead to the suspension. They do have the right, and no one denies that, but I do disapprove.

On air personalities should be treated like DVDs with commentaries, where the parent corporation clearly says that they do not endorse or blah blah blah the views expressed on the show.

By XM assuming this attitude of responsibility, they are continuing the precedence already set by CBS with JV and Elvis, and Imus.

I do not want ANY broadcasters to influence the content of ANY form of talk radio. It is their job to provide it as is. I do believe that something like the "CBS Evening News" IS CBS's responsibility, and they should censor that how they see fit.

Waterwagen,

If that is true then XM has sent mixed signals to O&A over what is allowed, and what isn't. XM pay O&A to be shocking, funny, and provocative. I can give you a list of 10 things done by O&A that are as shocking/provocative as them being flippant about the XM apology:

1. Making funny of Heather Mills miscarrage
2. Baby Bird
3. Norton and Opie fighting live on-air
4. Norton telling Dragon Wagon to flush his xm, buy a sirius, and go f**k his mother with Eric Logan sitting next to him in studio
5. Superball (which was copied by BTLS a little while ago)
6. Making No Filter Paul S**t himself on air
7. Throwing the poker chips
8. Flower Tucci squirting on Big A
9. The Philips Phile "War"
10. Hoo Hoo Howie's daughter and her Kabala play (MYYY VAGIIIIIIINA!)

This is a real short list. If they do not get hit for any of this then why would they get hit for the other things.

Humble Opinion,

YOU ARE A DOUCHE! Your thought is not humble at all. You want to tell me and others what I can and can't listen to. I found the show to be funny when Homeless Charlie was on. It beats listening to porn whores on a sybian machine. I do not agree with raping anyone, no reasonable citizen does, but the fact that someone is that far off the deep end of reality is really quite comical.

So quit trying to censor what I listen to, and go back to Rev. Al's podcast.

"I doubt very much that Howard's fans would get behind him to this degree if he were in trouble."

Howard fans show support with their wallets, not with worthless babble about how wonderfully wacky he is. Thus the reason, a company is willing to pay him 500+ million and doesn't get into trouble in the first place.

That's why CBS was willing to allow him to talk about Sirius every 10 seconds for a year before he left. They were making more money for themselves than they would had he been fired the second he signed his contract.

The only reason you've ever heard of a LOT of products is directly related to stern. At this point, who cares if you believe me. Just know its been told to you and you were too fucking stupid to listen.

Every last one of them will admit that they owe a ton to howard and his support.

Companies don't give a shit about how well you(the consumer) can flap your gums.

The governemnt is not the only establishment that can take away your freedom of speech. Corporations can censor...special interest groups can censor. When you advertise 'uncensored', 'raunchy' and 'irreverent' on a service that you are PAYING to hear...then yes. It is a free speech and false advertisement issue. When Sharpton said he was offended by Imus's comments...he was practicing free speech. When he pressured CBS and sponsors to fire Imus, he crossed into censorship. We as adults have the right to hear what we want to...and also have the ability to change the channel. We as American's do NOT have the right to not be offeneded. Grow a thicker skin and shut up. Don't censor the creative expression of artists that a majority wants to hear. Its not just an OnA thing. If Howie wasn't so damn selfish and greedy, he'd think about the industry and his fans...and not just himself. And you fans bought his lies and hypocricy hook line and sinker. What will you feel when he is off the air because of something stupid too? oops...too late. Coulda made a difference, but chose to be selfish dumbasses. So sad.

Oh and for you fucktards who STILL don't understand why they got fired, I can only assume its because you've never held a job in your lives.

Look at it this way. Say you do something that your management doesn't agree with. Say they scold you for it, pat you on the ass and let you go on your merry way. 5 minutes later, management sits there and listens to you talk shit on the decision to let you off with an ass pat. Do you think you're still going to have a job the next day?

Humble Opinion,
What is 'garbage' and what is 'filth' and what is 'crap' is a matter of opinion. You assume that because YOU consider something 'filth' or 'garbage' that it, in fact, is. Either you do not know the difference between opinion and fact or you think you are the one person in the world who is fit to judge. You are bitching about the Liberal Hypocrisy but it is the Liberals (Jackson, Sharpton) who are the first to cry foul when the line of political correctness is crossed. I agree with you when you say that we are free to say what we want but we better be ready to face the consequences. However, this is not the public or listeners getting these guys suspended. Channel 202 is the most listened to XM station. This is management bowing to special interest groups and phonies like Sharpton, Jackson and Al Gore who SOMEHOW (and I cant't figure out how this happened for the life of me) managed to gain a public voice. This country is becoming a nation of crybabies and the United States of the Offended. The Imus thing never would have happened had the ridiculous media not made a huge deal out of it. This is the same media who gave the f*ing Anna Nicole Smith thing round the clock coverage. It is scary how much power the media has in this country and most of them are the liberals that you are putting down. If you don't like what you are hearing, stop whining about what is filth and what is crap and what offends you personally. Act like a goddamn man and turn the channel! The founding fathers of this country are turning over in their graves. People have fought and died so that Opie and Anthony and Howard Stern can say what they want. Then the media gives a voice to some phony proven liar like Al Sharpton who only benefits and gets attention when his followers consider themselves victims. Wake the f*ck up people! It is a goddamn radio show! I decide what is decent for me, not the freakin FCC, not you Humble Opinion and not you Al Sharpton. Children are being abused and our war veterans are in shitty hospitals but your main concern is some dumb comment that a homeless guy made on a radio show??!! Jesus Christ what is this country coming to?

I've said it before, I'm a Stern fan but I think what happened to O&A is stupid. Good for these companies to stand up and not take this bullshit. I can understand why XM was upset but it could have been handled in-house. This makes all of satellite look bad, if we want Sirius and XM to grow, we don't need the public thinking that the companies still follow the same rules as testicle radio. We want to hear what we have been promised, not a lame version of it.

>> Oh and for you fucktards who STILL don't understand why they got fired, I can only assume its because you've never held a job in your lives. >>

That's all well & good except for two glaring issues:

- O&A are on an XL channel, and have made jokes about far worse scenarios than grown women being forced to have sex. XM never made it a point to censor them before, which leads me into reason 2:

- It wasn't a big deal until it drew the attention of the national media - Drudge, O'Reilly, etc, etc. My guess is that someone's radar went off as soon as a political figure was mentioned. Who knows - most likely someone with a grudge. Watching Mancow in action, I wouldn't be surprised if someone like him leaked the story to get O&A thrown off the air...

While I agree with you that I couldn't get away with it at MY job, but my job isn't 'shock jock' on an uncensored satellite radio channel. I think you'd have to concede that different standards apply.

I guess Stern fans are a different class of listeners

It is not that Stern listners are a different class of listeners, it is that Stern is in a different class of other radio talent. NO ONE stood up for stern when he was in trouble in the past. In fact his competition sent his tapes to the FCC to report him, because they could not compete with him. Stern was always number one or close to number 1 in every market that he was in. I doubt we will ever see that again. I was looking at the ratings last night and saw that there is not one station where Greg and Tony is over a 2.0 rating. They are 0.0 at the lowest and 2.0 is the highest. That is prety pathetic. The Spanish speaking stations have more listeners. Now that is funnY!!!

What a cheap trick on the mail order coffee seller to get its name in the media. These morons could care less about O & A

"ZERO POINT ZERO"
hahaha ignorance at its best. Lets see, under your logic Tell em Fred is 0.0 in Dallas, New York, Buffalo, Philadelphia, and every single town in the country.

Ben S.,

I could not agree more. I used to be a Stern fan (actually I am still a fan of the pre 1996 stuff). I think that we could have an issue when people start to aim at others. If it wasn't for this O&A crap BTLS could be in serious jeopardy again. This is a time for the fans of satellite to be heard.

Schimshamity,

O&A, like Stern, are not like you and me. They are not employee number whatever. How many times has Stern, O&A, Imus, Don & Mike, The Monsters of the Morning, BTLS, Manc**t, Rush Limbaugh, G. Gordon Liddy, and Ron & Fez openly slammed management on their radio shows.

So I guess all these guys need to do exactly what management says huh stupid. Is Howard still saying WNNNNNNNNNNBC like pig vomit told him to do? That is Checkmate you double-standard having ass.

"While I agree with you that I couldn't get away with it at MY job, but my job isn't 'shock jock' on an uncensored satellite radio channel. I think you'd have to concede that different standards apply."

That I will do, but that's why they only got suspended instead of fired like us. There is a fine line between Shock and really bad decisions. There are a lot of ways that they could've handled the interview they would have turned this drama into a complete non-story, do you agree?

"O&A have a ZERO point ZERO rating"

Open challenge to: sternfan73 and HappyTypingJoo

Please point to a source OTHER then what you heard on either the Howard Stern Show or any Howard Stern Message Board that has substantial evidence to back this claim up.

Until then you all are essentially making asses out of yourselves. Don't believe everything you hear. (I know that is tough)

You mean I have to pay for sat radio and still put up with advertising?

Pick one, ads or subscriptions, and then get back to me. Okay?

sternfan73,

How does it feel to be a fan of the 2nd most famous Howard Stern?

Schimshamity,

I apologize for having an opinion. I see now that I was wrong. I am going to stop going to music fests and get a 9-5 with a big corporation and never have an independent thought of my own.

Wait... What if I relapse to my old ways, and I ACCIDENTALLY have my own thought?!?!?!? should I
a) castrate myself to prevent any other thoughts
b) cut my balls off and pick up a a book on Karl Marx
c) put a place my balls in the car door and close it to "teach me a lesson" about having an opinion

respectfully falling in line,

Fucktard

There's nothing wrong with having an opinion as long as you can live with being painfully stupid.

>> There are a lot of ways that they could've handled the interview they would have turned this drama into a complete non-story, do you agree? >>

To be honest, I never thought it was a big deal. Usually when you hear a bit or a joke that would deserve 'outrage', you'd recognize it. This was, IMO, nothing more than the hosts laughing at the ridiculous comments of a homeless man. Endorsement of those comments? Hardly. But I suppose that's up for debate, as well as being subjected to out-of-context soundbites.

The 2nd part of the situation I'm still trying to figure out. I heard the entire portion of the programs on Monday and Tuesday in which they supposedly 'disobeyed' management's orders not to talk about the incident, and I'm confused again as to what was so bad. IIRC, the incident was discussed in a general fashion while O&A expressed their beliefs that the climate of radio was becoming increasingly hostile towards their type of program.

I must have missed the 5 seconds of radio where one of them said "F*ck XM", or something comparable worth of a insubordination-type suspension from the airwaves...

It still amazes me to realize how few people know what the right to free speech is. It is essentially the freedom from government prosecution against your opinions and beliefs and your right to voices those opinions and beliefs. It is not the right to say what you want when you want in any particular platform. XM is a private industry. They have as much right to decide what their logo is attatched to as O&A or anyone else has to say what they want. XM may have knee-jerked in the wake of recent media happenings and in anticipation of things to come, but their rights to have final say over what goes out across their airwaves is of no less value than anyone else's rights to so-called free speech.

I may need to start drinking coffee. Wasn't it a Coffee Company that was the only advertiser that said they would support Don Imus? Stock in coffee in porn will be on the rise.

Anyone? I left my sternfan to English dictionary at home today.

To bad GM, Staples, or American Express card did't have the balls to support Imus.

i'm sorry pete i was giving an opinion.
isn't that what got them taken off for the month.

I hope Bodog and Tell them about the discount harry. advertisers pull there ads to.

I got mine right here Pete, it translates as follows

"Upon receiving the results of my HIV test, I became depressed and treated myself to some tickets for Thunder Down Under followed up by a relaxing trip to a day spa"

I can't believe that people are defending a description of sexual violence against a minority woman. O&A's time is up and they need to go.

This isn't about free speech. The jackasses got let go for a month and were given pay... what more could you ask for?

If you support their stance, then you support violence against women, pure and simple. That makes you human scum.

so silly that they still dont get the ZERO POINT ZERO and why no one really cares how true or untrue it really is.....

As much as i hate o&a and hope they rott, i gotta call bullshit when i see it. XM radio should have balls and it's despicable the way they folded to the backlash. Fuck XM radio and their board of directors. No wonder they're looking to merge with Sirius, the redheaded stepchild of satellite 2 years ago, in a 50/50 and appointing Mel Karmazin from Sirius as CEO.

XM sucks!!

I have seen comments (here & elsewhere) about how Howard Stern fans wouldn't be this passionate if this situation fell on him. The reason is simple. Stern cares for himself. He has admitted this more than once. It's all about Howard for him.

Opie & Anthony spend time to meet their fans at various events. They allow some fans into their show at times. They have a PalTalk room that they maintain with their own money, to allow fans to see more of the show.

10 years ago, I was a Stern fan. I give credit where it is due, he did do a lot for the business. That was then (well, much earlier than 10 years ago really). What has he done lately? I hear nothing in the news about him. Aside from clips that O&A play (usually ripping him, I might add) I wouldn't know he even exists anymore. Sure, he has a core audience. Most entertainers do. But he is FAR from the "King of all Media" he once claimed (well, he still claims) to be. In the immortal words of Stephen Colbert, "he's dead to me."

Bravo to the XM sponsors who see this for what it is, a service failure on the part of XM to deliver what they claim. And if you think Howard is beyond this, well, that is nobody's near-sightedness but your own (and Howards, of course).

Screw you idoits who are obssesed with the Howard Stern vs. Opie & Anthony bullshit. Get a life! I support freedom of speech and want all options on radio. I wouldn't Opie & Anthony or Howard Stern being censored on what's suppose to an uncensored platform. XL on Opie & Anthony's channel tells you to expect offesive content. Advertisers know this as well. No one tunes in to Opie & Anthony for clean family fun. As long as no laws are being broken, anything and everything should be said and done on an uncensored platform.

For me, it is NOT about O&A vs. Stern. I am not about to pretend I like Hoo Hoo, but I would support HIS rights as much as anyone else. Unlike Howie, I am not all about my own agenda. If he could see past the nose on his face (no pun intended, honest) he would see that he isn't the untouchable god he thinks he is. If he would be happy to take his money & retire, then do it. I have been listening to that rant from him for 15 years. If he's such a hard-ass, then step up to the plate. If not, STFU, kk, thx.
