StarPlayr iPhone App not accepted by Apple; It's still not over yet

Sirius XM on iPhoneLast night, the team at NiceMac announced that Apple Inc. has notified the developers that the iPhone App for streaming Sirius XM Radio was not accepted for inclusion into the iTunes App Store.

It's important to note that this isn't the end of the process, and the door is still open when it comes to opening up satellite radio to iPhone users.
"As of yesterday,  the uSirius StarPlayr Application for iPhone still had a status of 'In Review' with Apple," said a NiceMac representative in a written statement. "Later in the evening we became aware that the application was not rejected, however could not be approved at this time." (emphasis added)

This is a very carefully written statement, which is why I've bolded the key words above. Apple did not explicitely reject the app, and by all accounts, the StarPlayr App itself is technically sound.

So the question remains as to exactly why the app was not approved "at this time."

There's a lot of moving pieces to all this, and there's a lot of hopeful users anxiouslty waiting for this solution. All we can do, at this point, is patiently wait.

(Just a quick note, what we don't want to do is email/call Apple or Sirius XM or NiceMac with complaints and hatemail. That actually won't help the situation at all. If anything, honey is preferred over vinegar.)

Send it to Blackberry for their up coming app store. Please

I'm angry!!

Looks like the most likely explanation Ryan -

Excerpt

Rumors began to surface over the past two days that there could be some copyright concerns on the part of Sirius/XM that may prevent the StarPlayr app from being cleared by Apple. In a brief phone conversation with one partner at NiceMac, I sensed that attitudes remained extremely optimistic that StarPlayer will eventually make its way into the iTunes App Store. That optimism was expressed to uSirius supporters along with a heartfelt thanks from the NiceMac team.

Damn Ryan - You do know your posters don't you? I can only imagine that they are chomping at the bit and about ready to explode right now.

Only reason I can see Apple holding off on accepting it is the price. They may feel they're opening themselves up to a lawsuit from SIRIUS XM if they allow NiceMac to make money off an application that is SOLELY dependent on SIRIUS XM's streams (i.e., it may pass if allowed to be free or SIRIUS XM gets a piece of the pie).

Another possible reason is that Apple knows that SIRIUS XM is implementing a new streaming service in a couple weeks and doesn't want to start selling a program that may be broken and require an update that may take a while to develop.

I, personally, think that SIRIUS XM should buy NiceMac (hell, I bet they're pretty cheap!) and get the app out YESTERDAY!

Screw that! This country was built on vinegar!! Voice your opinion: apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Screw Apple. Release the Blackberry version since it doesn't require any kind of 'blessing' by the mothership.

Personally I feel this is bullshit and it is ridiculous if the guys at nice mac don't go ahead and release the app on cydia or some other alternative.I have been patiently wait for this app since the release of the Iphone 3g,only to have some one tease a group of starving dogs with a juicy piece of meat.If something dose not change within the month I am official done with this app. What difference does it make if you charge us for it in itunes or cydia, release it in one manner or another so all parties are happy and cut out the middle man (apple).I hope something changes.

A unhappy fan!

I really want this app to come out my whole plan was to dump my XM units and use the online feed exclusively. Hopefully Apple changes their mind.

Yes Sirius XM should be the ones trying to get this approved, not a third party. At the same time, I am really dissapointed. I have about a 15 minute commute to work and I would rather plug in my iphone rather than mount car kits, and 12v plugs, and run antenna all over the place.

I hate not being able to listen to the replay on the ride home (O&A).

I was only buying uSirius for Howard Stern. If it never releases, I'll cancel the Internet stream. I can't listen online at work. At home I have my Sirius radio.

I would have thought NiceMac would have had a deal with Sirius XM before releasing this app. Apparently not.

Wow. I was (still am) really looking forward to this app.

I've been checking NiceMac everyday in hope of there being a link published to the AppStore. My purchase of this app was guaranteed ...

Looking around, I see that Starplayr may become available as a Cydia app but I really do not want to Jailbreak my iPhone. (Just as I would never want to futz with the architecture of my Mac Tower)

So, I add my rant here rather than write to Apple and complain. I love my Mac's but this is realy dissapointing.

-end rant.

Thanks

I would assume that NiceMac, LLC had gotten some sort of permission / approval from all parties prior to starting this lengthy endeavor.

I sure hope they get things straightened out soon. I'm really looking forward to it.

DONT YOU THINK IT WILL BE APPROVED MARCH 10TH THE DAY BEFORE THE INCREASE YOU KNOW HOW SIRIUS WORKS ITS THE SAME AS CHANNEL LINEUP.DONT BE BLIND,ITS HOW IT IS,AS A SHAREHOLDER YOU SHOULD BE USED TO THE WAY THEY WORK.

And to think I bought an iPhone for this. *keeps fingers crossed*

Still working great on my WinMo... as it has for Y E A R S. They'll probably get this working just in time for March 11th changes to break everything anyway. Keep buying into the Apple world of "you'll do it the way we want you to and you'll like it".

I'm not bitter, though :)

Unreal. I have been so excited for this app all month. This is a huge disappointment. I can't understand why this would not be approved. Doesn't apple make some coin off these apps wouldn't you think they could make a ton of coin off this app. Wouldn't this app help sirius and xm subscription as people don't need to buy equipment to listen. Wouldn't this make consumers of the Iphone giddy with glee about this wonderful app. I just don't get it.

SiriusXM subscribers pay a separate fee for each radio device. This would be another radio device. SiriusXM would obviously charge another monthly fee to use their service through this device. I'm sure that's what the issue is.

Funny part is that XM just said something big was coming next week. I really hope it was not them counting on this already being approved?

It's simple, Apple doesn't want people to listen to SatRad with StarPlayr. So, instead of coming up with some sorry excuse, they are hoping that if they can delay until Sirius XM institutes a monthly fee for current subs, fewer people, maybe a considerable amount, will not buy the app. It's a business move really. I predict it will be approved either the day of the Online rate hike or the day after. Apple still sees ( even with all the financial problems ) Sirius XM as a threat of some sort.

Also, I believe it is in the iPhone SDK agreement that, even if approved, Apple takes no legal responsibility for the app's capabilities. So, in theory, as long as there is no pornographic material ( which Apple has said they can be held responsible for) there is no legal issue here with Apple and Sirius XM.

Apple realized that Slacker was much better and didn't want another shitty product, figuring that Sirius/XM will be out of business by the summer

Slacker has an iphone app! So I'm good!

Don't be a slacker. Be a starplayer.

Since there doesn't seem to be a "Starplayer" I will now check out Slacker!

Maybe someone will post a beta version somewhere.

Why has every move that Sirius has made as of late been just FUCKING DUMB? Yes, I do believe Sirius themselves are behind the blockage and they will continue to shoot themselves in the dick. Their days are numbered with me. I've been listening to Bubba in the morning on my iPhone and I'm pretty happy with that. I'm learning I can live without Sirius if I have to.
