Thousands of Chrysler autoworkers walked off the job today after talks with the United Auto Workers (UAW) failed to reach an agreement. This is the first UAW strike against Chrysler since 1997.
The UAW is not striking at all plants though. Apparently the union kept five plants outside the strike action because Chrysler already had idled them because of sagging sales of some models, according to an AP source.
Reuters is reporting that the 5 plants were avoided because it is a tactical move, meant to protect income for workers at those plants and make the action more costly for the automaker.
Recall that the UAW struck GM for two days before tentatively settling with the automaker. They must reach new four-year agreements with all three Detroit automakers, and has yet to come to an agreement with Ford.
A short strike likely will have little effect on Chrysler, which had a 71-day supply of cars and trucks on dealer lots at the end of August, according to Ward's AutoInfoBank. A walkout longer than a month would start to cut into sales, said Paul Taylor, chief economist with the National Automobile Dealers Association.

Last I checked, I thought that's all unions normally did (raise costs for the companies that are passed on to consumers). Over $6,000 of the price of a new domestic car goes to covering the costs of employees who no longer work for the company.
I can't wait for the day when every one of these useless monkey's are replaced by a robot.
Ok, that was hilarious.
pfreak wins line of the day :)
You guys are just fu*king brilliant. People died forming unions for the working man many years ago. The union rate is a good wage, but what you "monkeys" fail to realize if the unions fail your wages go in the shitter too. They fight for the union worker...and indirectly the non union worker benefits also. Pull your head out of your ass and look around. In the last 6 years the idiot in the white house has done more damage to American wages than Reagan did in 8 years. Remember the air traffic controllers? Remember "trickle down" Reaganomics?......I didn't think so. Sure there are more jobs than prebush, but most of the good paying jobs are history. Most manufacturing jobs are overseas, but Its funny how the jobs are gone and the corporations are not even paying the minimum wage in these other countries but the cost of everything still goes up.
PS. I really fail to find anything funny about the "line of the day". In fact screw orbitcast.
yep everyone loves to see the union guys get whacked......
but then then companies will use whatever they take away from the unions
as a standard for non union give backs.
like healthcare,vacations
I don't know, but we here in Arizona, a non-union state, seem to get along just fine. In fact, we have more jobs than we can fill, wages have grown at an acceptable rate, and our city has been rated the top to live, retire, work in and relocate your business within the last few years. Frankly, I don't know what keeps the auto companies from moving their operations to a non-union state, since it would give them a huge advantage in the long run. Unions may have had their purposes in the past, but that's where they belong.
I heard Mrwirez - Irwin, PA has contacted Reverend Al, and a boycott has been organized on Obitcast. Ryan Saghir should be fired!
I drive a truck. I've had to pick up and deliver to union and non-union customers. Some auto, some not. It is absolutey infuriating watching these people "work". Some of the most sorry lazy people. I was a union supporter until I experienced it from this side. You can't understand how lazy non-working they are until you are actually waiting on them to do their job so you can do yours. I'm so glad the unions are dying. The union workers killed it themselves.
Mr. Wirez: You guys are just fu*king brilliant. People died forming unions for the working man many years ago. The union rate is a good wage, but what you "monkeys" fail to realize if the unions fail your wages go in the shitter too.>>
They already have, and taking out government and civil services, unions represent less than 8% of working people today. They lived off the fat when it was there, and the fat is gone- to China and India mostly. But aside from that, unions did promote corruption, organized crime and laziness. Union greed costs my state dearly.
My mother used to tell me the world doesn't owe me a living. Get in the game, pal.
I didn't think so. Sure there are more jobs than prebush, but most of the good paying jobs are history. Most manufacturing jobs are overseas
You can thank the American (and international) consumer for that. Those jobs were leaving the continent during the Clinton administration also. Everybody wants everything cheap, including union workers.
Im with Mrwirez this country is heading down the shitter and fast...I once bought an american flag and it said made in China.....
Demand to much and they will move jobs out of country.
Imports killed my business i know what i am talking about.
Just take a car apart and you will see that a large part is made by non union people in other countries.
Unions are for lazy people. Unions were alright 20 - 30 years ago , but times have changed .
>> In the last 6 years the idiot in the white house has done more damage to American wages than Reagan did in 8 years.
What's that got to do with the price of eggs? If Unions were so effective, wouldn't they have stopped that? Oh that's right, they're not effective.
And maybe my memory is clouded, but the Reagan era was filled with rich baby-boomers (a generation I suspect you're part of) snorting cocaine and enjoying the life that Reagan helped establish for them. Do you remember Jimmy Carter and the state of the economy then? ...I didn't think so.
>>Sure there are more jobs than prebush, but most of the good paying jobs are history. Most manufacturing jobs are overseas,
Manufacturing jobs != Good paying jobs.
All the shit jobs went overseas because of the Unions strongarming the corporations here in the States. Detroit still needs to compete with Toyota and Honda, who by the way, are kicking their ass and creating higher quality products. Detroit is being bent over the barrel by these Union bastards, and Toyota is quickly going to be #1.
Oh, and Toyota directly employs approx 38,340 workers in North America. But they don't deal with the UAW. What's that tell you?
And those nonunion workers at Toyota make as much or more annually than the union kiddos at the Big 3. Its not hard to see why our domestic automakers are having so many problems competing with the foreign automakers, when they are already so handicapped by labor costs.
Because of these labor costs, when Toyota makes an Accord, they profit something like 1300 dollars or something of that nature. By comparison, Ford was losing a couple thousand on each Taurus made due to labor costs. Wow, its not hard to see why the Big 3 are becoming the Little 3.
Here is how well Toyota and their NONUNION plans are going to go. Stick it to the working man while he is happy and distracted. -I am sorry but mrwirez is right. Without union representation these huge corporations will take, just for Toyota's bottom line. Who cares what will happen to Johnny when he gets hurt or too old. First to go is health care, then pensions or contributions, vacations, etc. all the while, billions of profits go back to the motherland-JAPAN!
