Up close with the XMP3i

The new XMP3i is the only "new" radio being introduced by Sirius XM this year, so we got up close and personal with it.

So what's the difference with the XMP3? Not much except the new PowerConnect FM transmitter.

I don't want to diminish the importance of that - the PowerConnect will help change the retail landscape for Sirius XM. But it's definitely not "exciting" (for the consumer at least).

Rest assured though, the "i" designation has nothing to do with "Internet" - but more to do with, uhm, "insertion" instead.

I'm actually more interested in the travel antenna! Do you have any information on that?

You read my mind. That travel antenna looks somewhat promising.

First off it SUCKS that there is no WiFi on the XMP3i. FAIL!!! As much as I bitch at times about XM, I listen to it every day. It would be nice to have the ability to use a receiver without needing a dock and an antenna when indoors. BOO!!!

What's up with the travel antenna? Looks somewhere between a tampon and a vibrator. Maybe that is where "insertion" comes in? I am guessing this might be XM's way of marketing to the female demographic.

And finally what's up with the guy they used to model the XMP3i in the display from CES shown above? Way to look current. The guy looks like he is straight out of a Sears catalog from the 70's. Looks like he should be modeling an 8-track tape deck as opposed to a portable satellite radio.

WTF?!

Hey Ed - couldn't have said it better. You read my mind. What are they honestly doing there to put up such an advertisement.

Wow, Ed. Who pissed in your Cheerios today?

Er, you're complaining that the guy in the ad is a white male, aren't you? Would you have preferred some "photo-shopped diversity"? You know, those advertising pictures with a mathematically determined group of "friends" containing exactly one black couple, one hispanic, one Asian female and one white female all enjoying each other's close friendship in some mythical neighborhood that only exists in the fantasy life of white "wine and cheese" liberals (who are usually rich and live in gated communities, but who have hispanics do all their chores, btw), sociologists, and university professors.

As for me, it's nice to see a white guy by himself in an ad for a change - it breaks a taboo.

Wow. Way to twist my words to make your own point. I don't really give a crap who they use to model, I was just goofing on it. And if you look close, you'll see that there is a black guy hiding in the bushes waiting to jump out and mug this guy.

Yeah I looked for that guy, but it was too dark in that area, I couldn't see him

Hey, what do you know about reception? I'm listening to Xmp3i right now on the 13th floor of an steel building without any problems and no antenna attached.
