Opie and AnthonyNew York's 92.3 FreeFM WFNY is reportedly dropping their "hot talk" format as of today. The flip occurred at 9am ET.

According to the New York Daily News, CBS Radio's 92.3FM WFNY is switching from their all-day talk format back to contemporary rock as it was during the Stern days. WFNY's website right now has a clock counting down to 5pm ET.

The status of XM/CBS Radio hosts Opie & Anthony and Ron & Fez are currently unknown. But if WFNY drops the talk format completely, that would leave O&A without a home for terrestrial syndication.

CBS Radio President Dan Mason (who replaced Joel Hollander last month) reportedly has made it clear Free-FM isn't his favorite format. Since he arrived, the Free-FM tag has been dropped at Chicago's WCKG and San Francisco's Free was moved from FM to a smaller AM frequency.

CBS Radio created Free-FM in reaction to Howard Stern leaving terrestrial radio back in 2005.

UPDATE: AllAccess is now reporting that Opie & Anthony will indeed remain in mornings, but that the other on-air staff (including Ron & Fez) are out. John Mainelli is also reportedly getting the boot. Mainelli came on board as WFNY's PD after being ousted from the New York Post due to "disagreements" with Howard Stern.

I want to think that I heard Ron & Fez are getting dropped, but Opie & Anthony are going to stay for now. That's far from confirmed though.

ZERO POINT ZERO

THEY ALWAYS WIN IN THE END

WELL fmqb says

"Opie & Anthony are expected to stay on in mornings."

guess we will see tomorrow

If O&A don't return, are their fans going to smash their FM radio and cancel their FM subscribtions? LOL

Just a little of their stunting off the stream:

Some day we will tell our children about the days when shock jocks roamed the earth. Long before the nappy headed asteroid hit, wiping out a swath of jocks and forcing the survivors to adapt and evolve into timid podcasting rat-like mammals.

If a washed out piece of shit hack show goes off terrestrial and satellite radio, does anybody besides the "army" of 30 pests care?

I didn't think so. Howard Stern always wins.

They just played an OLD O&A clip in their stunting...

:CBS Radio created Free-FM in reaction to Howard Stern leaving terrestrial radio back in 2005."

Well, according to the pests, that's just Howard's ego, and the Free FM thing was just a coincidence. It was probably more of a reaction towards Opie and Anthony a year and a half later after being on satellite since they have a huge format. Wait, who's brainwashed again?

Howard said this would happen. He heard a rumor about this and guess what? He was right!

"who's brainwashed again?"

I dunno. There isn't a single pest talking shit in this thread, yet there are plenty of Stern-tards commenting.

what is playing on WFNY right now?
anyone in NYC hear it?

I dont get it. Not the fact WFNY is going to flip, Free FM was a bad idea from the beginning. But why do O&A get the speculated free pass? Ron and Fez had a great book. They should stay, not O&A. Oh well.

I think Free FM was dead when not 1 but 2 shows were brought on from satellite to save it. Kind of defeats the Free moniker.

There's also rumors that Steve Kingston is leaving XM to go back to 92.3 FM in New York.

>>"If O&A don't return, are their fans going to smash their FM radio and cancel their FM subscribtions? LOL"

I think it would be more like a tree falling in the forest...

Aside from the 20 or so "pests", would anyone notice? Or care?

I doubt it...

Zero. Point. Zero.

I don't think that's it Mike, try again... the "pests" have a live show worth listening to from 12-3PM every day unlike HOWIE 100

I thought all you idiot pests broke your XM radios.

By the way, we get 15 to 16 hours of live radio shows a day. A bit better than 3 hours.

god damn it! O&A and Stern are both liked and hated for what they do. Bottom line is that this form of entertiainment is either growing or dying. If O&A are falling then so will Stern. Get it through your thick skulls people. Now move the FUCK on.

As for Free FM.... the first time I hear it I thought..
Free?????
does that mean there something better if I pay for it? ...
Oh look!
Satellite Radio!
COOL

3 hours of R&F > Anything, anywhere.

BABY LOVE!

"By the way, we get 15 to 16 hours of live radio shows a day. A bit better than 3 hours."

7-8 hours of lackeys talking about and playing clips from 5 of the other hours isnt exactly new content.

Wake up Hoo Hoo fans. Everyone else's loss isn't necessarily your gain. Hoo Hoo wouldn't be doing any better if he was back on terrestrial radio in this PC environment.

Here's a suggestion. Why don't all of you leftover Hoo Hoo fans celebrate this big "victory" by collectively getting on your knees and giving your fright-wigged idol a big kiss on the ass?

You can all bet your +/- $2.00 shares of Sirius stock that this will be your last "victory" if the merger doesn't get approved.

Down with the merger, and death to the Dark Side! Die, Hoo Hoo fans, Die!!!!! Long live O & A!!!!!!!!

As per the press release, Opie and Anthony WILL be on the air.

New York’s K-ROCK made its triumphant return to the airwaves this afternoon when 92.3 FM launched a new rock format that includes a custom blend of rock music personalized to the distinctive tastes of the New York listener. Branded “The Rock of New York” and kicking-off with Nirvana’s All Apologies, the station’s new line-up features artists such as Linkin Park, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica and Led Zeppelin, among others, and will continue to showcase THE OPIE AND ANTHONY SHOW weekday mornings from 6:00-9:00AM.

How can they possibly change formats, dump all talk talent but yet retain "failures" O&A?

Have a party if you want Stern fans, they'll be about 18 million or so empty seats though, the number of his listeners that have moved on over the last 10 years.

I think they need to bring me back.

DIAMOND DAVE TO THE RESCUE! :)

I'm always amused at how many Stern fans feel it necessary to comment on such an 'insignificant' topic such as the O&A show - you know, seeing as they're void of any talent and all.

HOO. ROBIN. HOO.

What Howard Fan would call this a victory. Move on. I certainly do not care if Free FM switches formats or not. Philadelphia finally has a new alt. station and it didn't matter since I have sat. radio.

The best news from this is the rumor that Steve Kingston would go back to FM--where he belongs...

Please God, rid XM of this FM hack.

You pests must be angry with Ryan for writing: "CBS Radio created Free-FM in reaction to Howard Stern leaving terrestrial radio back in 2005."

LIES! LIES! Yeah, and O&A have a bigger satellite radio audience than Stern has as well! Stupid lemmings.

"You can all bet your +/- $2.00 shares of Sirius stock that this will be your last "victory" if the merger doesn't get approved."

come on everyone lets tell the kid how 2 dollars is greater then 12 dollars shall we?

lets take a look at the market cap of siri = Market Cap: 4.24B
now lets do the same for XM shall we = Market Cap: 3.64B

now i know a few years back in 5th grade they taught you that 2 is less then 12, but in the buiness world stock price is not reflective of the value of a company.

so even at 2.90 vs 11.90, the 2.90 stock price is still worth 16.5% more.

sure siri has diluted their share count to death, but nothing a good 4-1 reverse split could not fix after the merger.

oh and

"LIES! LIES! Yeah, and O&A have a bigger satellite radio audience than Stern has as well! Stupid lemmings."

wins the award today......

...sigh

I do not take any joy in anyone losing a job, but I will make an exception in John Mainelli's case.

Wow, PNess doesn't understand sarcasm. Wow, I thought you were smart. Read my whole post again.

Funny how all the Stern fuckos are commenting, yet I've only seen a few pests comment on this, and they don't seem to be all happy either. and for all you idiots who think O &aA are failures, lets see you last12 years in the radio business, have a few promotions that got them some positive and not so positive publicity, and let us not forget that they were on satellite almost a full 15 months before Hoo Hoo. 15 months is a long time,so nobody can ever say Hoo Hoo was first. Yeah, Zero. Point. Zero. indeed. I know i'm really not changing anyone's minds but there it is for whatever it might be worth.

PNess, you're too smart to be a Hoo Hoo fan. Leave the Dark side and come over to the Light.

Good post.

On the other hand, PNess, you sound a lot like Skilling and Lay did just before the Enron collapse.

Watch that Sirius stock drop, from less than $3.00/share to $0.00.

Zero point Zero Zero

Guess who I'm listening to on K-Rock? Hint: It ain't your boy Hoo Hoo.

Let's put this into perspective.

Opie and Anthony have finally finished Stern off. They have his job, and for now, current and edgy enough to even get in trouble on SATELLITE RADIO. The only way Howard will get O&A off the any airwaves is through back room bitching--not because he can take their audience through his show.

Howard is SUCH A REBEL! He has Mel's d**k in his ass, is taking the day off, taking the summer off, and leaves his fans to comb O&A message boards to use a bad Artie line that were funny 30 years ago. And you idiots defend PAYING this for crap?

Howard is old. Howard is washed up. Howard sucks.

i don't know what this world is coming to. i LOVE LOVE O & A & Jimmy too!! they wake me up every morning and make my every morning so much more enjoyable! soon the only talk radio will be on AM ~ and that's gonna suck! upon reading the article i noticed that the changes started happening when new management took over. the canceling of shows in big cities and now the new format here ~ just goes to show you that if it ain't broken, don't try to fix it! i do hope Opie & Anthony STAY FOREVER ~ in fact they should be on longer !! love you guys!

The utter stupidity in some of these comments are truely laughable. Only someone truly special(read as: fucking retarded) can connect the dots the way that some of you can. I think the "our show is so awesome, we can't even pay to listen to them" arguement is my favorite.

It really is too bad that Ron & Fez lost their FM show in NY. At times, even censored, I liked it more than their XM show.

More Ron & Fez == More Gooder

Maybe CBS will push them over to some other station.

Just play some fucking music that people want to hear. This talk bullshit is done. What happened to ROCK radio? Too much payola, too many program directors, too many "independent" record promoters, too many egos. The combination of all of those elements have created a massive void in rock music and the airwaves that play rock music. I hope Krock fails. I hope that the major labels go bankrupt. The industry should be about the artistry of rock music, not the corporate profits.
