What's the deal with Oprah?
Oprah & Friends debuted on XM Satellite Radio back in September, and aside from making the rounds in the press on launch day, there's been little fanfare surrounding her partnership with XM. So what's the deal?
XM's approach with Oprah obviously differs from Sirius' strategy with Howard Stern (and I loathe the comparison of the two). Rather than creating "an event" like Sirius did with Stern (a result of exclusivity), XM's partnership with Oprah is much more low-key.
In fact, the only exclusivity that XM gains from the deal isn't even from Oprah herself - it's from her "friends" (Gayle King, Jean Chatzky, Maya Angelou, Dr. Oz, etc) which provides a value to Oprah's audience. Oprah's involvement is more in the way of branding, and using her famous "influence" as a promotional vehicle.
And therein lies the problem. Since the launch of Oprah & Friends, there has been very little in terms of promotion for the channel coming from Oprah (at least as far as I've seen). Now, I understand that Oprah can't been seen as a shill for every company she partners with (her "influence" being
well known - especially by her fans - opens her up to scrutiny over everything she promotes), but surely there's more that can be done.
Oprah brings other things to the table like exposure to A-list advertisers (which of course benefits Harpo as well), but it just seems like she could be doing more on the promotional side. The channel has compelling content for the Oprah fan, but there needs to be something - anything - that creates the need to subscribe.
Perhaps "an event" of some kind? Any suggestions?

She has pushed IPODs at least 3 times, in a huge way, since last November.
Nothing for XM.
She has been a huge disappointment for SAT radio.
I bet she hasn't pulled in 100,000 customers on her own.

bbbbut when oprah mentions a book it goes to number one, a radio is the same as a book isnt it?

All she has to do is mention XM on her show every once in awhile and do something exclusive on XM then her fans will flock. She has to push this like her books but I don't watch her so I don't know what she is doing.

Same thing with O&A. They bring up the iPod far too often, makes me a little sick.
The Oprah deal, the O&A to FM deal, both flops. Sucks.

Ryan,
You need to forward this to Parsons - you make several great points. It makes no sense that they are not taking advantage of the "Oprah Effect". If she's going to be a part of XM she should earn her keep.

I agree ...
Ryan ... the XM Top Brass need to be reading this BLOG
on a daily basis!
Oprah needs to be convinced to have a special give-away of Roady XT's to help plug the service and her channel.
And then XM needs to read this feedback and apply their favorite slogan - AFDI

no events to think of that would help. Just that huge promotional connection she has if she up some effort to it. I can't say that she is a big draw for me personally, many of the things she does are a bit distastefull. Maybe there is some kind of rif or maybe XM was hoping the initial sign up and starting of her channel would be enough.

It's not that I don't see that value added by Oprah, but there's just an odd level of silence coming from her. She doesn't need to be as transparent as touting "XM! XM! XM!" on her show all the time - in fact, I'd hope she wouldn't do something like that.
But simply just talking about what transpired on Oprah & Friends (i.e., describing what the audience "missed") would drive the desire to join in.
Let's face, those who want to listen to Oprah & Friends are those who watch Oprah. So on-show promotion seems like the logical thing to do. Again, she can't be a shill, but it benefits both Harpo and XM if she drives awareness of the channel up.

im sure XM had received many more advertisers because of her but it could be promoted in a better way--I also think Sirius could have done sooo much more with Stern this holiday season--I didnt see ANYTHING with him via promotion FROM sirius--i saw stern on letterman but that was stern doing his thing--Why no commercials, print with stern etc.?
The marketing dept.s in BOTH sats really bite

I agree Ryan...seems like she's doing none of that. I was hoping she would give XM a nice boast but I don't know who is listening? It's still a new deal and alot can be fixed....if she wants to.

I think she has some lovely and impressive brown-sugared ta-ta's for a negro woman from the south.

i have a theory; perhaps satellite radio is kind of a guy-gadget type thing. think about it, people hear about sat. radio, the guy goes to best buy and gets the coolest radio for his car. the girl probably isn't interested in fooling with that doo-hicky. i'm not trying to be sexist, i know women get sat. radio, but how many girls are on this site? the oprah fan base isn't the type to go out and get these after market radios. i could be way off here, so forgive me if i am.
none-the-less, oprah has a total lack of drive to push for xm subs. its like martha; why would a billionaire care about more subs? especially if radio is not oprahs business. its stern business, so he drives to succeed and prove the nay sayers wrong.

"i have a theory; perhaps satellite radio is kind of a guy-gadget type thing."

Not going to jump here and scream "you're wrong!", but I believe this to be one of the BIGGEST mistakes satellite ever did. Targeting one demographic was plain stupid, and Sirius was the one that started it with the celebrity channels and Stern.
Satellite radio was supposed to appeal to all masses, not just one, so now its overall appeal has dwindled (retail anyone?). Now, you hardly hear anyone but the young male demographic talking about it. I remember when several seasoned individuals talked it up for the great music and talk not available anywhere on the terrestrial radio dial, and it was easier to install than it is now.
Oh, how these companies hurt themselves.

Back on topic with Oprah. I don't think anyone is more dissapointed than I am that she has done virtually nothing to promote the service, and satellite in general. XM/Sirius need to change their mantra from a "one demographic" service to a "appeal to all" service, just like they used to before the content wars.

I think Oprah could really give a damn about Sat. Radio. XM gave her her pocket change, which essentially is the right to use her name in marketing XM. She could care less about programming her channel.
Besides, how would she look if Sirius swallows XM (that's what a "merger" between the two is shaping up to look like) and it looks like she backed the wrong horse. Oprah don't lose!!
Additionally, with both Sat. Radio companies floundering at the moment, she doesn't want to be associated with a failure. Remember, a chink in that well-spun armor could affect her TV syndication money, which is all she really cares about.
Oprah's happy to throw whatever crap programming she has lying around at her "channel", collect some cash and wait on the sidelines. I wouldn't be surprised if she owns quite a bit of stock in both companies.

i agree with MikeHunt, no of us know the true nature of the Oprah deal. She may have it so they can use her name and her friends but she doesn't have to plug it at all.
We are all up in arms about her not doing anything, but to be honest she doesn't do anything for her channel either. She gave her name and that is all she is willing to do.
