XM Canada Hits 120,000 Subscribers

XM CanadaXM Canada has reached the 120,000 subscriber mark in its ninth full month of operation and
the completion of its first fiscal year (ending August 31, 2006).

Fourth Quarter subscriber results increased by 50 per cent over Third Quarter results. Want to figure out the YoY figures? Too bad. Canadian Satellite Radio launched XM Canada only in November of 2005, so there are no corresponding prior year figures for CSR's fourth-quarter and full-year 2005 results.

The growth of satellite radio up yonder definitely appears to be positive - we like that.

Question is, what are SIRIUS Canada's numbers looking like? Especially since a survey done earlier this year showed SIRIUS Canada was leading in market awareness (on the flip side, another survey said XM Canada was leading in awareness, so there ya go).

ummmm. If sirius canada has the same unchurnable subs in promo periods then their numbers will be much better. Also remember that XM canada specified 64,000 or so Self Paying Subs at the end of Q3. Sirius canada does not tell us how many are self paying. Infact the latest total Sirius subscriber numbers could include Canada. The last time they were specifically not included was Sirius year ending 2005 numbers. The Q1 Q2 and soon Q3 sirius number may all include Sirius canada Subscriber counts.

SIRIUS U.S. and SIRIUS Canada are companies that are owned and operated independently of each other. The only canadian subscribers that the U.S. can report are grey market ones or individuals that sign up for the U.S. service but live in Canada.

As for the article, the information that is cited in terms of market share/preference is very outdated and does not considered the results that have been announced this year.
May - SIRIUS Canada breaks 100,000 subscribers.
June - XM Canada at 80,000 subscribers
Sept - XM Canada at 120,000 subscribers.
Also, considering the Canadian NPD data that has been posted on other sites I would expect that SIRIUS Can. is the clear leader.

Didn't XM canada expect 1M subs by 2010?

Looks like they are on track...

XM should start counting 25% of XM Canada's subs as their own--since they own 25% of XMC--this is how wireless companies like Vodafone count subs.

From their 10-q from 9-Aug-2006:

In December 2005, SIRIUS Canada launched service in Canada with 100 channels of commercial-free music and news, sports, talk and entertainment programming, including 10 channels of Canadian content. Subscribers to the SIRIUS Canada service are not included in our subscriber count.
