XM Podcasts

XM Satellite Radio is now available on iTunes. Not all of it of course (that would be silly), rather a select number of XM's original music, news and sports series are now available as free podcasts.

It's an interesting move because the traditionally the "satellite radio" moniker went hand-in-hand with "payment" - a majority of the content is meant to be hidden behind the walled garden. Of course, XM has been going against the grain with this concept, what with Bob Edwards and Opie & Anthony being made available on free terrestrial radio. Sirius has played the podcast game as well, but only by dipping the toe in with quick snippets.

But XM is leveraging what many believe to be one of its strongest assets: their original programming.

It's not just talk-radio like Opie & Anthony (though there's a bonus for O&A fans: animated video podcasts) and Bob Edwards, but James Carville, Luke Russert, Mike Krzyzewski, Barry Switzer and exclusive XM programs like "Artist Confidential" and the comedy special "Unmasked" have joined the fray.

"By making these original XM series available through xmradio.com, iTunes and other popular podcast web sites, millions more consumers have an opportunity to sample some of the best in premium music, news and sports programming that you can only get as an XM subscriber," said Eric Logan, XM executive vice president of programming.

Yes, of course podcasts can be accessed by other programs (like Odeo and iPodder), but XM has worked out a special section on Apple's iTunes just for their programming. .

interesting development....anthing to do with that Apple bus with XM in it? Hummmmmmm

If you are not listening to "Unmasked." You are missing out!

Check out the podcast.

This is a great idea for getting word out about XMs special programming (assuming it can be found easily on the itunes store page). I see this as a good plan because of one good reason: The people using the iTunes store are willing to PAY for content. There is a good chance that some of those who try a show or special out of curiosity will end up trying the service (or opting for it in a new vehicle).

What I would like to see is expanded content for current subscribers (i.e. all of the unmasked shows)

absolutly FanDamTastic!!!! See XM "Gets It" They really do. These guys see what the future holds and are headging all bets. This is a very wise buisiness move and one that WILL pay benefits in the long term

Good marketing and a great convenience- if you haven't been using podcasts (it's like TIVO for radio) you're missing out on a lot of content you can listen to at your leisure- another reason I like my Helix, the most versatile satrad hardware out there.

I wonder if some of Coke Logic's animations will end up here.

I want my Jimmy Dean Sositch...

I love this. It seems like it is bonus material to your favorite shows. The 60/20 Sports show is great. Carville is indeed the ragin' Cajun and it really comes out in this show.

I think this can bring in some new listeners, especially with the teasers for artist Confidential, Unmasked and the XM music review. It exposes the service enough without giving up the real meat of the service.

Good move XM. Now just make 3 months of free service and free activation standard and you'll really be rocking.

My god. They went podcast willy.

@MarkS: I added a screenshot of how prominent the XM Podcasts are on the iTunes Podcast page. Prime spot in the upper-left.

Thanks Ryan. No iTunes here at work. I will definitely be subscribing to those when I get home. Finally a use for my iPod again

whats up with the Unmasked shows?? they dont show up on the list to subscribe. Anyone know how to get these?

This is very cool...I wonder if this will create any conflicts in XM's deals with Napster, or with the availability to purchase O&A and Bob Edwards shows via Audible.com. I like it though; very cool. I'll have to set up the RSS reader in IE7 to keep these updated, and see about setting Winamp to handle the downloads of new episodes. Hopefully, they'll eventually archive all of the Artist Confidentials (I haven't checked out the site yet, so they may all be there, I don't know).

Personally, I'd like to see XM either scrap the Audible deal for O&A, or do like ESPN Radio does and offer entire O&A or Bob Edwards episodes for download instead of just selected clips.

Just threw about 5 of them into my Zune podcatcher. Interestingly, the 60/20 one doesn't have any content posted (and is thus messing with ZMP) yet.

How good of Elo to screw O&A out of the announcement. I hope he has the balls to call in tomorrow with the same old bullshit excuses.

Wes, not sure about Bob Edwards but the O$A show is only a very short animated video. There is an ad for another show (cbs) on the itunes page but this one is not available in the US? So there really is no comtent from the boys offered visa podcast through itunes (yet?)

Just got home and checked it out. Looks like O&A are the only thing on XM with 2 separate podcasts to subscribe to.

You know, because they suck and all.

How long until HOO HOO has a podcast, and says he invented it....

Beautiful. I was waiting for this to happen. XM has some great comedy specials that I have often emailed them about getting else where... Looks like they have finally done it.

Kudos to XM. Look for those alternative revenue sources and keep your customers happy!

And as was mentioned before, great way of advertising too. Deals with Apple never hurt... I had said MULTIPLE times before the merger was announced that Apple should buy out one of the companies if they did not merge.

To those asking about this, its simple. The combined company is obviously going to farm out its second-tier content, and keep the top shelf content exclusive. Hence why you'll find Bubba/Greg & Tony on FM and now iTunes for free. Howard will only be on Sirius and on the Sirius Backseat/Howard TV setup.

Im shocked at this development. Im sure it wont do much good at selling XM units but its still a good idea.

Please no merger!

"Howard will only be on Sirius" Good! Its just the right place for him....Keep that old bastard behind the so-called {walled garden} that way he has NO chance of ever becoming the king of NEW media. Ya know the... new media....a place where bands like Radiohead will remain relevant.

sooner than expected....0.0 smart enough to realize that podcast are there only future

Sattelite=failed
FM=failed
podcast willy = most definitly will fail

how can such horrible talent be this bad...seriously

"ATTACK"

podcast willy if you're so fucking smart and master of all that is radio where's your fucking show? Oh right your a zombie with your head up somebody elses ass. Die in a fire. Competiton is good keeps both shows on their toes. Kill yourself 0.0, pness or whatever the fuck your name is today. We get it they suck wah. Hey mommy calling breakfast is ready.

I thought we went over this... his name is "JGatie"

I thought we went over this... his name is "JGatie"

"Kill yourself 0.0, pness or whatever the fuck your name is today"

LOL, i actually think this is a good idea.....but i would put a bigger delay on the release so it makes people who really love it want "newer" shows.

but thanks for thinking for me....no really...thanks

keep dreaming your own reality, it works.

"Kill yourself 0.0, pness or whatever the fuck your name is today"

love to take credit, but not me
but he's right, everything 0.0 touch turns to shit

glad your thinking of me sweet tits, and i dedicate this song to you
by old blue eyes
"Ive got you under my skin
Ive got you deep in the heart of me
So deep in my heart, that youre really a part of me
Ive got you under my skin"

You know how incredibly stupid this "podcast willie" thing is? How stupid you sound? Everything, and I mean everything will be available on demand within 3 - 5 years. If you're not on a podcast or VOD, you're done. This is a very competitive environment. Not moving to new media is completely fucking stupid and a death blow. If Hoo Hoo stays only on Sirius he becomes even more irrelevant than he's become already.

BTW, O&A have been available as a download pretty much since they began on XM. Embrace change. I know that's tough when you're old.

Now I've got to get back to rubbing my foreskin on your mother's tongue.

How getting more exposure for the show is bad I don't know. O@A aren't going anywhere any time soon. It is interesting that no matter what XM does, or O@A do the spin doctors have to turn it into something bad. Look at it like this Howie's over inflated ego and income is destroying Sirius and he is pushing for the destruction of XM. This is a bad thing. We want satellite to continue and be profitable and have a nice selection of varied content. Not Stern Satellite Radio with some music channels. I am glad XM took the approach they did instead of sending all their money to a whiny old fart. Whatever I don't even know what I'm trying to say anymore.

"I am glad XM took the approach they did instead of sending all their money to a whiny old fart."

me too...i mean all the subs 0.0 and oprah bring in is far more superior than the "whiny old fart"

feel free to pull your head out your ass and join civilization & reality

For the money they paid, they are indeed far superior. I'd argue that Howard's time is done and many personalities and shows are far superior to his but even if I was still his #1 fan I'd realize that what he was paid and what he brought in for subs is a disaster. XM actually make money off of O&A, Sirius hemorage it over the Howard deal. That's the reality.

Look at how many subs have been added since he cam onboard. Sirius was at like 500,000 and now they have something like 6 million. So he brought in 5+ million subs. At $12.95/month that comes to 932 million a year that his listeners are bringing the company. His total cost is only $100 million a year for both channels. Tell me how $800+ million in profit from Howard is a bad thing please?

Again, this is not the math. Unless you can prove that every sub from the point Howard started, joined for the reason of getting Howard, those numbers are inaccurate. You brag that Howard has "1.22 million listeners", yet he actually brought 5+ million subs. So, based on that, 5+ million signed up for Sirius, but, only 1/5 of those 5+ million listen to him? Shouldn't that number be alot higher, if he really did bring that many people over?

And to 0.0- I really do not think there is anything that needs spinning. It is yet another outlet for Opie and Anthony (in addition to XM, FM, Paltalk, Direct TV, etc...) to make the show more popular.

Another outlet to give Greg & Tony away because nobody is paying to listen to them until their contract runs out. Then its bye bye bitches, hello podcast willie.

And how is it that hard to figure out that not every Howard fan listens every damn day? Also you must factor in 101 as the West Coast listeners catch the show on that and probably rarely turn in to H100.

Ok if Sirius is making that much because of Howard (lets's be honest Artie Lange is the real talent on that show) why do they need to merge to survive? They should have buried XM by now.

Now I've got to get back to rubbing my foreskin on your mother's tongue.

Such anger, peef. Why are you such a bitter little clown? Is it because your hacky heroes are reaching new levels of fail on almost a daily basis, while "Hoo Hoo" and company continue to soar with success?

Cheer up, sweetie! I think tomorrow is "RaWk ScrEem ThURsdAy" on the Gregg 'n Tony Morning Z0.0! *honk honk*

It is yet another outlet for Opie and Anthony to make the show more popular.

...because the others have proven SOOO successful, eh?

Notice how that grunting redheaded board-op never uses the "O&A Virus, Spreading Across America" tagline any more? There's a reason for that. It's called embarrassment. "The Virus" is in full remission to put it kindly.

Podcast Willy, here we come.

Merger decision expected soon and 0.0 go Podcast

just a coincidence i guess...huh?

If nobody listens, how do you know he does not say that anymore? You must be listening.

"Merger decision expected soon and 0.0 go Podcast

Actually, they put their old bits as a Podcast. They are not putting pre-cut shows or live shows on the podcasts. Some of the bits they are putting on are almost 2 years old.
Honestly, you are not looking at this logically. By the way, it is not just O&A that are going to have some of their stuff on there, it is the entire company. If your logic were true, than the entire company would be gone. That would mean, no merger would happen, cause all of the popular shows on XM would be gone.

OK.....Who wants to bet?
I'll give ya 5yrs.......What'll be more popular? Pay radio with its soaring costs and limited playlists (based on said high costs) or User driven ( internet)content (mostly free) which can be widely accessed and shared? The convienence of listening to WHAT you want WHEN you want alone makes this bet a no brainer.

People today and in the future dont care about exclusive content as much as they care about making their audio entertainment "personal". Hell just look at the popularity of free television shows being bought at iTunes for 2$.......Lots of folks are willing to PAY just to make their entertainment more convenient to them.

Call it a podcast, a webcast, intrnet radio or any damn thing you want.......its the future and those who dont embrace it will surely fail.

Bitter, sad, failure SatSadMan. Last I checked O&A were on about 20 FM stations, 20+ million direct TV units, XM, Pal Talk and now iTunes. I haven't heard a peep about howie in 2 years. He's on the last place SDARS company and......oh, the massive on demand failure. Having a podcast on iTunes is a huge thing. In the age of new media I applaud any show doing a podcast, it's the very near future but howie only bothered with a web site 4 years ago. Old people don't like technology.

"I'm not having a website until it is completely world changing. I refuse to have a site like everyone else's" - Howie, 2002.

Guess what, it's like everyone else's.

Bitter, sad, failure SatSadMan. Last I checked O&A were on about 20 FM stations,

Yes, they're on 30... um 28... uh, make that 24... ok, 20 stations. Nice trajectory!

20+ million direct TV units,

of which 3 are actually used to listen to them. DirectTV should have stuck with their original plan and dumped those boat anchors.

XM

Where do they rank again? Somewhere after the XM Polka channel I think...

Pal Talk

lol...
HAI, WE IZ ON WEBKAMZ! WE RULEZ THE INTARNETZ!

and now iTunes.

where a few "animated shorts" on iTunes will vault them into the stratosphere exactly... how? When they get a full-time, dedicated on-demand TV channel, THEN we'll talk.

I haven't heard a peep about howie in 2 years.

Thou art full of shit, peef. You know as much as anyone here that he's constantly in the news (sure - insert your stale, dated "Howard K. Stern" joke here, Mr. Original), he is the top draw on Sat Rad, and he dominates internet search statistics compared to your two failing morning zoo lightweights. And seeing as you "haven't heard a peep", how is it that you can comment on Howie, here, on an almost daily basis?

He's on the last place SDARS company and.....

Oh REEAAALYY? The "last" (out of 2, mind you) SDARS company that has something like 65-70% of retail market share? That is #1 in brand recognition? That has led in subscription adds for every single quarter for the past two years? That is strong enough to effectively buy out the competition? Is THAT what you consider "last place"?

.oh, the massive on demand failure.

*sigh*

OH HAI! WE IZ ON PALTALKZ WEBKAMZ! CAN U SEE US?? WE CAN SEEZ U!! LOLOL!

Having a podcast on iTunes is a huge thing.

Dude, have you scanned the iTunes podcast list? I mean, I'm all for podcasts and what not, but saying it's a "huge thing" is a wee bit hyperbolic. There are over 100,000 podcasts on iTunes (including tons of radio shows already) so Obie & Andy's "animated short" thing ain't exactly revolutionary, nor is it going to set the world on fire. Any Tom, Dick or Spaz can publish a podcast on things like gardening, basket weaving, or lobsters.

In the age of new media I applaud any show doing a podcast, it's the very near future

Nearer than you think for certain failing clones, my friend. Nearer than you think.

but howie only bothered with a web site 4 years ago.

Yes, Howard was late to the web. He's a radio guy, not a webcam star. But if you check internet traffic statistics, you'll see that sites like howardstern.com and SFN generate FAR more activity than any of 0.0's disjointed online offerings. So he's doing quite well for himself on the web, thankyouverymuch.

Old people don't like technology.

Uh... old? So have you checked Cumia's birth certificate lately?

p.s. Happy ~ RaWk SkReEm ThUrZdAy ~!! *honk honk hack*

SatRadMadMan ...nice own on a "wacky zany" pest

whats the over/under that pfreak's response is some scripted "hoo hoo" line or scripted lines they've been told to recite from the morning zoo?

and stern fans are "zombies"

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHAAAAAAAAA SHEEP!

0.0,

You are the ONLY one here who consistantly trolls and tries to keep this stern vs. o&a shit going. You have pretty much destroyed what is an AMAZING website in regards to satellite radio by trying to turn everything into an argument about talk radio.

Headline: "XM and Sirius release new hardware for the holidays"
0.0 Post: "Why would you want new hardware that only plays the same old clone talk radio that will soon be on podcast only and all pests are fat and I like stern and bababooey and and and..."

Heres an idea: SHUT THE FUCK UP

Or better yet, start your own satellite radio blog where you can post whatever you want to about whoever you want to whenever you want to.

Not all of us here are trying to find out which morning talk show is better via opinions of the pathetic fans of both side.

---------------------------------------------------------

Now, that being said, in an attempt to actually contribute something to this story, I really enjoyed the XMU segment they had up. I wish they would go ahead and just post full or shortened versions of the Radar report or similar shows instead though. I uinderstand I can just record it on my inno, but the podcast had too much of a commercial feel to it with reminders about free trials after every song.

SatSadMan, 20 more stations than Howie. Top revenue grossing channel on XM. So many listeners on Direct TV that it's the ONLY talk channel they carry and only because when they tried to pull it the outcry forced them to put it back on, hardly three people listening. Pal Talk, I agree there's not many people on it but it's added audience and something that will only grow. Did you know a youtube only TV show was just picked up by NBC? Talk all you want about mindshare. XM is still leading by 2.5 million subs, same as they were when Hoo Hoo started (you'll scream 1.5mill but I don't count unsold cars in lots). If you think all content isn't going on-demand in the very near future you have no business posting. Just having a partnership with Apple is huge. And you ignored Stern's statement about having a website that would change the world only to have a "me too" site.

Hey, it's Friday, enjoy the gossip game again for the 10th year of it...oh wait, you don't get a show on Friday, Howie's in the Hampton's.

And punt.

4 day work week and still bury 0.0 in subs...sad sad sad

I'm convinced that SAT rad mad man, anonymous Coward and 0.0 are all the same person, probably Howard Stern. Such anger over 2 other radio personalities like this is not healthy. Seek theropy at once.
