XM is following in Sirius' footsteps by creating a dedicated artist channel - this one is devoted to the iconic band Led Zeppelin. Dedicated artist channels in the past have been greeted with a lukewarm (or sometimes frigid) reception among fans, mainly because they tend to come at the expense of a current channel.
Thankfully, that's not the case with XM LED.
XM LED: The Led Zeppelin Channel, will launch tomorrow November 8th and run through May 8th, 2008. It will debut on XM channel 59, without putting any other channels on hiatus as a result.
On channel's launch date, XM will also air the U.S. premiere of "The Song Remains the Same," the re-issued two-disc soundtrack from the band's concert film of the same name. This album will feature six previously unreleased songs from Zeppelin's live concert that ran for three nights in July of 1973 at Madison Square Garden.
XM LED: The Led Zeppelin Channel will also feature the band's complete audio catalog, interviews with band members and other content that celebrates all that is Led Zeppelin.
The launch of the dedicated channel of course coincides with several "new" releases coming from Led Zeppelin. They're also: releasing "Mothership," a 24-track re-mastered career retrospective; making the entire Zeppelin musical catalog available digitally; and also kicking off a reunion performance headlining the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute concert in London on December 10th.
Listen to an extended audio promo below to get a good sense of the sound and creative direction for the channel:
(Length is roughly 1:30)
[XM LED]

The SIRI-tizing of XM's music programming is now underway.
I like Led Zep as much as the next guy, but dedicating a channel to these guys is a play right out of Karmizan's lousy playbook.
Congrats to XM for figuring out that payola (I mean promotional considerations, of course)can be a valuable revenue stream!
To Stack's point, I offer just one response. This further shows that XM is going to "SIRI-tize" their programming philosophy whether there is a merger or not. When you figure out why they are doing it, you'll have a better view of where this industry is headed.
I don't agree. If this was to SIRI-tize XM, it would have to replace a channel that people know and love... like Top Tracks. Then XM could say that Zeppelin has "taken over" Top Tracks and be on their merry way.
After hearing that promo I'm actually excited about this channel.
This is a glorified holiday channel. I see nothign wrong with it since no other channel is going away. It's temporary and seems to offer more than just an ipod set to Led Zeppelin. Will I listen? Probably not. I still think artist channels are lame.
I don’t think that dedicating a whole channel to any one band is a good idea; I never listen to Sirius’ Elvis channel, the Grateful Dead channel, or the Bruce Springsteen channel. That being said, Led Zeppelin is one of my favorite bands, and I would listen to it from time to time if I had XM.
I do think that stations like Sirius’ Radio Margaritaville and Siriusly Sinatra are good, because have a culture of their own and play more than the music of just one artist.
IMHO, instead of dedicated artists channels, they should produce one channel that has artists on rotation. Each month can feature a different artist so no other channels get pre-empted or lost. It will allow a lot more artists to have representation on satellite, and one whole month is long enough that even a person on vacation can catch a good few weeks of the artist on at the time.
I'm not a fan of artist-specific channels, and all in all, I wish XM wasn't doing it. But I am glad that at least they set an end date for it.
Perhaps some day they'll have a channel that focuses on one artist at a time for much shorter periods-- like a day, or at most a week. That would be pretty cool.
Bah, everyone knows these guys just ripped off Sabbath.
AW SHIT, swimwalk,swimwalk....
Kind of like the Dead Channel. Other than that, the artist specific channels blow.
Zep doesn't have enough in the catalog to sustain 24/7
What's next? Celine XM60? Jeez. (Zep is a band for old farts!) What they really need is a channel with live content. Ideas: A really live listener-participation rock show on Saturday nights and/or overnights. Lots of band member visits, enthusiastic fans and great DJ personalities. Think back to the live Wolfman Jack or Cousin Brucie's evening shows on WABC 40 years ago. Now that would be quite a channel, except XMs should have new contemporary content! Goodbye Zep - Hello Fray. XM...what do you say?
Karl - do you know anything about how marketing tie-ins work?
They can't bring back Music Lab but can dedicate one channel to one band. BS.
Didn't Zep steal all of there songs from others? So, this would be the first cover band channel.
Yeah, that's great and all, but why XM 59? Why not 55? Are they going to be putting something there in the near future, because it's strange to have Zeppelin next to the sould channel? Is this a sign of more artist channels to come?
Here's some GOOD suggestions for the future. Beatles, U2, XM's boy Bob Dylan, and with you want somebody still relevent, Matchbox 20. Never happen, but hey, I can dream.
Note to XM: Put the AOL Sessions channel on radio, or have a channel of XM's version of it. I love it when U-Pop like plays an acoustic or live version, instead of the crap radio version.
And then stay tuned for the dedicated Flock O' Seagulls channel which will debut on May 9, 2008 and run for 17 minutes.
A cover channel wouldn't be bad either.
A cover channel wouldn't be bad either.
Karl - Go through the website and you'll find a lot of live shows on Friday nights and such. XMU has live from the Knitting Factory on Fridays.
Flap - Not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for but Check this show:
Deep Tracks Undercover
Tuesdays 8PM ET, Fridays Midnight ET, Saturdays Midnight ET
Deep Tracks Undercover features cover songs, songs that are so good that other artists are compelled to put their own stamp of originality on them. From the Allman Brothers version of "Stormy Monday" to Frank Zappa's irreverent read on "Whipping Post," tune in to Deep Tracks - XM 40 to hear these sometimes-hidden gems.
>> and with you want somebody still relevent, Matchbox 20. >>
Ick. Complete waste of bandwidth IMO.
Anyway, I say just keep the one channel and spotlight a different artist every couple of months - depending on who's plugging what.
Call it 'The Band', 'Influence' (or something else more creative), and rotate in guys like Zep, Sabbath, Aerosmith, Elvis, etc, etc. This way people will get their fill of a dedicated channel, but it won't get old as it'll be gone before listeners get sick of it.
Another fucking iPod channel. And it is taking away a channel. Channel 59. XM could have put something else on there, something I give a shit about rather than one single artist. This is a bad sign. Is this the merger helping out the consumer here because the last thing I want is a channel dedicated to an ancient rock band I never liked. This is why we need competition. If you don't like that Sirius wastes their channels on single artists you could move to XM. Now they're getting ready to homogenize both services and where are you going to go? Back to FM radio unfortunately.
Wasted bandwith. Please keep XM unleded!

Hey, I call 'em like I see 'em. XM or SIRI, it doesn't matter. What XM is doing with this channel is no better than what SIRI has done with a ton of single-artist channels.

Ever think people may LIKE single artist channels? I wouldn't mind one for the Beatles or the Stones. What's wring with tuning into Zep whenever the urge strikes?
Pete Said: I say just keep the one channel and spotlight a different artist every couple of months - depending on who's plugging what.
I like his suggestion.
In my book, and apparently a billion or so others, Led Zeppelin remain the greatest rock band that ever stepped on a stage. The site for reunion tickets received over a BILLION hits in less than a week, with over 25 million attempts to register. That said, I don't think that single artist channels are a great idea. There have been Zeppelin-Elvis-Beatles-Stones channels before and they were not a good idea then. Just because I consider Zeppelin the best does not mean that I don't want any selection on my rock radio station. As great as Led Zeppelin are, you still need variety, if for nothing else than to contrast with Zeppelin's brilliance. I suspect, however, that the station will do okay because of the enormity of Zep's fan base.

Comments to comments: Pete: I know plenty about tie-ins. I know more about subscriber retention. Tie-in all you like and make a quick buck - or - alienate your audience and deteriorate your sub numbers. All Led Zep for months? Yike. CalGoldenBear: I would love to know what live shows are on Friday nights, but XM has the most infuriating program guide policy. You may discover when a special or show premieres, but you'll never know about its re-reuns. Sure, I'll go to all 100+ channel web pages and see what I can discover. XM has always needed a simple guide to what's on and when all the plays of a show occur. As for the "big show"...What I am suggesting is a signature hi-profile show with a host as familiar as Bob Edwards (Ryan Seacrest? Ryan Saghir?) Big name acts would appear. New exclusives would air. Fans would get some air time. XM would have a talked about show, raising regular publicity, that they sorely need. May the spam begin! My helmet is on! Karl Zuk
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lee say it aint so?????????
:(
I love it... the shear number of comments shows that this was a brilliant move by XM. Very few posts Ryan puts up here get more than 20 resonses. It shows the marketability of Zeppelin. Complain if you want, it was a brilliant move... I wonder If Effanel music is recording the Zep show in London tis month?
I am an XM subscriber and just heard about the Led Zeppelin channel last night. I am not a huge Zeppelin fan... but I've been listening to the channel all morning and my ears are ringing from turning the volume to MAX on the drive in... This channel rocks! Well done XM!
I love Zeppelin as much as the next guy, but if you want to make the channel interesting, here's what you do...Play the classic album and live cuts...Throw in some solo Robert Plant, some Page and Plant, some Coverdale-Page, and maybe have a couple hours devoted to bands who some consider Zeppelin sound-alikes...I'm thinking groups like Great White, Whitesnake to a certain extent, and that one-hit-wonder, Kingdom Come.
And yeah, I'd love to see a live rock show on the weekends...Move Eddie Trunk back to Saturday nights, maybe get someone big for Squizz for the more modern rock...That would be fun.
I love the xmled chanel, If all you others dont like it ,YOU DO HAVE A BUTTON THAT CHANGES THE CHANEL. TRY IT AND STOP CRYING!!!!!

Hey, you young whippersnappers, don't you know that us "old farts", ie baby boomers, still rule. We are the largest consumer of everything. We are catered to by all industries. Just the facts. The Zep channel ruled. It's gone now but I like the idea. Saw them twice. They are the GREATEST rock band ever!!!
GOD! What a bunch of whinners! NEW CONTENT! Anybody listen recently? The music they are producing today STINKS! IMO. At least Zep had some melody and lyrical integrity instead of a percussion track and every other word bleeped out because of the "7 words" rule. You know they used to say all rock sounds the same, well they certainly are right when it comes to music of today. It's hard to find individuality now. As for Zep stealing others licks, maybe so, but they took what was there and made it their own. Yes I am a Zep fan, but, I am also tired of the same ole song and dance. Aliitle less of the Rap more of the rock.
xm led is the best thing to happen to sat. radio ever .
I agree instead of a total Led Zep station, have a rotating line up. One month Queen, another AC/DC, etc.
