XM Providing FM-Restricting Clips to Public?
An Orbitcast reader noticed at Wal-Mart that XM Satellite Radio is giving FM emission-restricting ferrite clips for free to the public. XM provided a box full of the black clips with instructions on how to apply the clips to your XM receiver to make it FCC compliant. The clips are free and XM encouraged all owners to take one. The NAB has recently called for a recall of all satellite radio receivers in a letter to the FCC Chairman. It appears that XM is doing everything they can to make this an unnecessary course of action (which, well... it was unnecessary to begin with).
Check out how XM uses ferrite beads to reduce the FM transmitter emissions here (and it's a helpful lil' How-To if you really want to do it).
Thanks Mark!

I saw these awhile ago at CompUSA. My buddies and me took a couple to help XM. We hope that if they have to replace a few boxes that XM can show compliance.
I would never USE it though. ;)

My Inno (holy grain of Sat Radio) car kit came with these attached, very easy to remove.

Thx for the tip tussel. It appears that it would be very difficult to navigate that thing around tight spots in a car with a ferrite bead attached. It would have been more entertaining if it was an adapter that was easily unplugged. Does the ferrite bead on the cigarette adapter do anything?

The two words I never want to use to describe anything I do with radio are "for free". Fuck this thing. For as long as I have my SkyFi 2, I will fucking have the dirty channels on, and transmit over a station I know is in the local area.

This is an interesting idea on XM's part, but who the heck is gonna willingly take one?

Hopefully offering these for free will loosen NAB's annoying demands of recalls. I wouldn't send any of my 4 in anyways but still.

Didn't XM's SkyFi 2 already get the ok from the FCC?

This is a hoax, folks! These are not ferrite clips to reduce the radiated power of your XM radio. They're Opie and Anthony-blocking devices, supplied by Howard Stern and his minions at Sirius. Fight the power, people!
