D-Day on XM
Next Wednesday, June 6th, XM will air a unique special that re-creates the radio coverage of D-Day, with archival reports from NBC’s original radio news bulletins of the invasion.

This incredible broadcast will air, in real-time, starting at 12:41am ET (which was the time of the first airing) and will end June 7th, at 5:45pm ET on The '40s (ch 4). The special will be based on the original NBC radio news reports of the invasion (currently housed in the National Archives) exactly as it was heard almost 63 years ago.

The marathon will also feature music of the era and archival reports from radio commentators of the day, including H. V. Kaltenborn, Merrill Mueller, and the other members of NBC’s news staff.

"Once we discovered that this material existed, we felt we had an obligation to bring it to XM listeners," said Program Director Marlin Taylor. "No one else would undertake such an endeavor and it is our role to keep the music and history of this era alive and available to those living in the 21st century."

Pretty amazing.

That is actually cool as shit. Can't really do that on a FreeShit radio.

Hey now. That is pretty cool. I wish I could hear it...

Wonder if I could locate it online somewhere...

You could do the free trial and listen to it online.

fuck that shit. I smashed my computer when O&A got suspended.

What? I can't hear you. I jammed screwdrivers in my ears when O&A got suspended.

I'm not a history buff. I was born in the 80s so I dont know anything about WW2 except for Nazis and the A-bomb.

But I really want to listen to this, just to get the FEELING of what it was like. Imagine that, a 20 year old listening to the 40s channel.

This should be very interesting. I will be listening. Good idea XM. Love you love your service.

Well as a Sirius fanatic, I am usually biased against Xm, but DAMN this is a great idea. As a 27 who loves radio I think it would be great to hear radio broadcasts of the biggest/ most important day from last century.

So I'm assuming this will start on Wednesday night/Thur. morning? (June 7 12:41 a.m.)? Or is it Tuesday night/Wed. morning (June 6 12:41 a.m.) and run all day and all night again? This stuff always confuses me.

great story ryan....no you cant get this on slacker. thanks xm! ya done good! i will be listening(and recording

Sorry about that.

It starts on June 6 at 12:41am and runs through to June 7 at 5:45pm. All times Eastern.

I'll update the post to make sure it's more clear.

I listened to this on XM about 2 years ago - actually it must've been the 60 anniversary - any rate, it was AMAZING - I stayed up for almost 24 hours listening to everything. Really takes you back.

I've got a Roady2. What would be the best means to record the broadcast? Directly to a computer? I don't need much on details. Just wondering in case anyone else has recorded from their receiver to another device.

Why stop at D-Day? Why not rebroadcast the entire war in real time? There's a way to retain listeners, I tells ya...

OH GOD! IF ONLY I HADN'T JUMPED ON THE RETARD-BANDWAGON AND SMASHED MY XM SUB WHEN O&A GOT SUSPENDED I WOULD BE ABLE TO LISTEN!

THANK GOD IT'S ON XM WHERE IF I REALLY WANT TO LISTEN TO IT FOR FREE FROM MY COMPUTER ENDLESSLY I CAN!

OR I COULD DIG OUT THAT OLD SONY (YES, SONY) RECIEVER THAT NEVER RECIEVED A DEACTIVATION SIGNAL AND THAT WOULD WORK FOR AWHILE TOO!

GLAD I CAN SLEEP AT NIGHT KNOWING I'M NOT FINANCIALY SUPPORTING THE ASSHATS AT XM!

GOTTA GO NOW, GONNA FIRE OFF A LETTER TO MY CONGRESSMEN AGAINST THAT BULLSHIT MERGER!

HAVE FUN WITH YOUR SHITTY HEAT-RADIATING RECIEVERS AND BANDWIDTH ALL GONE TO SPONGEBOB FOR THE BRATS IN THE BACKSEAT! At least you've got H0.0ward...

Wow. Seeing the class of people that love Opie and Anthony makes me want to listen even less than I already did.

I'm definitely going to try to tune in to this. Fortunately, my Nexus at home is empty at the moment (on clearance at Best Buy.. got a spare.) So I can record the entire thing and listen at my leisure.

WTG XM. That's a great idea. :)

> Wow. Seeing the class of people that love Opie and Anthony makes me want to listen even less than I already did.

In case you didn't notice, I was lowering myself to the Stern Z0.0mbies level. Opie and Anthony have countless top-level comedians and people like Kevin Smith, John Mayer, Quentin Tarantino, etc. who listen and are admitted fans of the show. How's their "class"? Are you not gonna listen to top 40 radio or see certain movies now?

It's a fucking INTERNET BLOG. If you really judge people based on the naughty words they use on one that's pretty sad.

But you're probably one of those uptight assholes who wants to impose their superior "morality" on everyone, and you'd whine about being "offended" anyway, and how we should all be listening to what YOU think we should be listening to, right? How's it feel to be judged?

I hope (just for you) that XM and Sirius merge and you're stuck with crappy, FCC-regulated radio that has nothing YOU like AND you're left with no options.

FRRRRRRUNKIS!

Shouldn't this have started? It's 11:49 Central time on June 5 (which last time I checked is 12:49 AM Eastern Time) and it's still the regular music.

The D-Day recreation is NOT being broadcast on XMRO, AOL or DirecTV:

Rather disappointing as I was expecting to be able to listen online all day at work, and didn't setup my Inno to record more than the first 6 hours.
