XM Satellite Radio has filed for a trademark for the term "SkyCube" according to a recent application at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Aside from the intriguing name, the description for the use of the trademark also piques some curiosity, because it indicates some never-seen-before behavior.
XM says that SkyCube would be used for:
"Satellite radio broadcasting, programming and transmission services; digital audio radio broadcasting, programming and transmission services; Internet radio services; webcasting services; digital media distribution services, namely, distributing digital media content from the Internet to portable media players and devices; consumer electronic devices; digital audio radio hardware and accessories; satellite radio hardware and accessories; receivers, antennas, tuners, transceivers, transmitters, remote controls, electronic control panels, batteries, battery chargers; radios; a series of sound recordings; entertainment services, namely, providing audio programs featuring music, sports, talk, news and data via satellite and the Internet; entertainment services, namely providing podcasts featuring music, sports, talk, news and data; podcasting services"Adding to the strangeness, it looks like XM filed for a similar trademark application at the beginning of this year for the term "SkyBuds" which features a similar description.
(emphasis added)
The fact that both the SkyCube and SkyBuds applications include the distributing of content "from the Internet to portable media players" and highlight podcasting services tells me there's more to XM's podcasting strategy than meets the eye. It looks like an accompanying device is in the works.

Doesn't matter. I'll just wait till you're out of business on this one.
Nate,
Great move, keep xm moving forward and stop Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin's "merge" scheme. Pick up the phone and tell Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin it's OFF. Then send Oprah, Snoop Dogg (The one and the only D O double G), The Rev. Al Sharpton and O&A over there to bust up Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin for dis-n XM like he has over the years. XM's got the quality, innovation and programming people want, there is no reason to sell out xm so that Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin can line his pockets for retirement. No reason at all to Uncle Tom to that white bread cracker.
NO! to Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin's "merge" MONOPOLY scheme
Say "NO!" to the NAB!
Yes! to Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin's "merge" MONOPOLY scheme
Dude, you are tired and washed out.
Why you insist on calling Mel his full legal name each time, quoting his common name, reminds us all what an NAB tool you are.
Maybe it's Mel's "scheme", but 99 and 96% of the shareholders of the companies VOTED FOR this "scheme". Vilifying one man is a rather weak toss, Sally.
NO to the merger, Hoo Hoo
Mat,
Still showing your a wealth of ignorance.....
NO! to Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin's "merge" MONOPOLY scheme
Mat, you are blind, ignorant, tired and washed out.
Since you insist on posting your ignorance it reminds us all that you are one of
Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin's bitches.
Maybe you'll smarten up and educate yourself some day.
"Since you insist on posting your ignorance it reminds us all that you are one of

Tough talk from a internet tough guy
... sending podcasts from the internet, over the satellites, to portable devices...
I don't know... I just don't see it. Too many podcasts... selection would have to be rather limited because of the bandwidth limitation, IMHO... Plus, I can only see this as a possibility assuming XM and Sirius merge and there's a plethora of bandwidth to bring this to reality.
Color me skeptical on this one... I need more info before I'll say that this is something I'd want...
It sounds like a fall-back position in the merger is denied. If it is approved, then it will be another way to put the 'SCREWS TO THE NAB.'
Haha this is the only way the pests will be able to pick up Open&Anus very soon now.
PODCAST WILLIE HERE WE COME! OUR CONTRACT HASN'T BEEN RENEWED AND WE ARE PACKING OUR SHIT TO MAKE ROOM FOR BUBBA 24/7 on 202!!!
Say NO to the NAB.. say YES to performer's pay.
The NAB calls this a "tax" .... Citizens call it "fair".
Pay up suckers.... there goes 6 Billion down the shitter and I'm proud to contribute to the NAB's demise.
I agree, make broadcasters pay royalties just like the rest of the radio industry.
No more free passes, karma's a bitch aint it?
I distinctly smell NAB perspiration.
It's about time we get some non "m-word" related news. THAT is what this site is all about.
Anonymous Douchbag that continues to quote the Karmizan's full legal name....Why do this?
Is it humorous to you? If so, i would imagine you laugh at Eric & Kathy in the morning (Chicago AM Drivetime Terrestrial bullshit)...You are not funny - no one else thinks calling someone by their real name is comical. You must've gone to the Jon Lovitz school of comedy you dumb, unfunny fuck.
I amost hate your 'Merge' Monopoly schtick just as much but at least there is relevance in someway considering almost everyone on here has a postion on the merge. You think its a monopoly. You're wrong, but at least I understand you trying to push your agenda.
You are an annoying broken record - just like your dying industry. Go back to your job as PD in local radio so we can all enjoy the completion of this deal.

Seriously this is getting incredibly fucking old now. **no** matter what story Ryan posts here, one of you stupid cunts posts something about either Howard, Bubba on some occasions, or O & A. Have fun cause you only have a little while longer. There is no radio war, both shows have stopped fighting. The only radio war is the one that exists in the half minds of the 2 howard and O & A fans who post here. It's gotten so both shows are really starting to suck now. Both shows are weak.
Did E-Lo find out about this "SkyCube" by reading it on Orbitcast?

The NAB, iBiquity, and virtually every congressman and Attorney General who steps in to this circus that we call a merger has been asking for the inclusion of HD chips into Satellite Radios. Of course, they never once mention who should pay for the design, the installation, the manufacturing, etc, etc, etc, but they claim they do it for the “benefit of the consumer.” Let us take a look at that claim.
As of 2008, less than 500,000 HD radios had been sold in the US. According to Bridge Ratings survey in August of 2007, less than 1 percent of respondents said that they planned on buying an HD radio in the next 2 months. There obviously is not a high consumer demand for the HD radio. Must be something else.
A quick google of HD Radio brings up a long list of places selling HD Radios at Retail. The average price is around $125, with some units running less than $100. The problem? According to John Gorman’s Blog, there are virtually no radios in Brick and Mortar stores for people to look at and play with. With such a new technology, you would figure that the HD radio alliance would be subsidizing those radios, to make them cheaper and more affordable.
Perhaps the HD advantage is it’s sound quality and ease of use? Nope, and Nope. Again Gorman cites multiple complaints about a large bulky antenna (which you have to move manually until you pick up the signal), signal’s fading in and out, and additional static on surrounding channels.
So what on earth can the HD Radio alliance and all of these top political figures mean when they say that HD radio is in the public interest?
Perhaps it is because it is the American Public that has been paying a large portion of the development costs for HD radio? Yup, that is you and I. An FCC filing from North Carolina’s Public Radio Stations cites “Just a few weeks ago, the House Appropriations Committee approved an additional $40 million to assist public readio stations’ transition to HD radio technology. Clearly the Congress supports our transition to terrestrial digital broadcasting.”
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) is “A private, nonprofit corporation created by Congress in 1967, is the steward of the federal government’s investment in public broadcasting. It has already awarded well over 200 million dollars for the advancement of HD radio, and those awards are continuing to this date. A quick search for “Satellite Radio” “Sirius” “XM” or “SDARS” brings up only a single result: The award of “nearly” $2 million dollars in SDARS.
Yes, clearly Congress supports PUBLIC radio. Why then, does HD radio need Sirius and XM?

Did I mention that the FCC five are a collection of inept, lazy, lying bureaucratic lately that couldn't find their arses in a dark room with both hands? ...I didn't think so.
While you've all be securing your FCC and future bids for Congress careers and contemplating your navels for 480 days, two companies I know and like have lost the opportunity for one car model year season, one father's day, and probably two Christmas selling seasons along with the lost revenue of probably 400K hesitant subscribers and an erosion of 5 billion dollars in market cap.
You're following in the footsteps of the great "decider" screwing up whatever you touch. Good jobs "brownies" .
Don't worry about Congress FCC... the Nab will be paying them regardless... how about just doing you GD job for a change?

HD Radio is very lucky to have Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin pushing his "merge" scheme like a crack dealer. A "merge" of satradio will be as good to consumers as crack is. Educated consumer know this and HD Radio is going to get a whole lot more consumers quickly IF mistakes are made and Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin "merge" scheme is allowed to move forward. Of course even IF Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin's "merge" scheme goes forward it won't be long before HD Radio gains all those orphaned satradio subscribers when Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin's "merge" scheme completes and the satradio industry will be more dead than it already is.
For those unlike Pocketradio troll, those who can read and understand:
HD Radio stations tune in to everything
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/products/2008-07-07-hd-radio-side_N.htm
"More than 1,700 broadcasters have added higher-quality HD Radio signals to their current traditional AM/FM ones. And programmers are using the extra broadcast channels that digital technology provides to woo audiences accustomed to niche-targeted Internet and satellite radio stations.
The broadcasts are free, but listeners need a new HD Radio to get the stations.
"What we come up with on HD has to be different than what we offer on terrestrial," says Thomas "Chase" Rupe of Emmis Broadcasting in Austin. "We are looking for that next level of audience satisfaction. The average listener may not be pleased with just the choices available in a market."

Superior digital sound quality. Digital HD Radio has the potential to deliver better sound quality than the usual analog FM and AM radio, with deeper bass, more extended treble, more stereo separation, and greater dynamic range (the difference between the loudest and quietest sounds). The actual quality depends on what the radio station transmits and how good a job the tuner does with it.
In our tests the HD FM and AM broadcasts generally sounded clearer and fuller than analog content from the same station. All of the HD FM broadcasts, whether the main channel or the "side" channels multicast on the same frequency, were free of background noise--the hiss or crackle you occasionally hear with standard radio. The better-quality broadcasts had frequency response, detail, separation, and dynamic range that approached audio CD quality. HD AM programs were received in stereo with audio quality comparable to standard analog FM radio, minus the background noise.
Fine analog reception and sound quality. The tuner did an exceptional job when pulling in regular analog signals, even weak FM station broadcasts. Sound quality was smooth and well balanced, with low background noise for AM and FM.
Easy to use. Controls are well laid out and well marked. All functions could be accessed from either the remote or the console front panel. You can tune in stations directly by entering numbers for exact radio frequencies, choosing a preset (up to 20 FM and 20 AM stations can be stored), manually tuning through the frequencies, or automatically seeking standard and HD channels or HD channels only.
Informative display. The console display can show frequency band, station frequency, time, signal strength, or an audio frequency spectrum analyzer. When receiving an HD Radio broadcast or an analog broadcast from a station that uses the Radio Broadcast Data System (RBDS, also known as RDS), the display can also show the station's call letters, song, artist, and other programming information.
the promise of HD radio, enabling you to enjoy digital radio sound quality and expanded programming without the subscription fees associated with satellite radio.

HD RADIO FLAWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the benefit to hearing "hidden radio stations" only exists if listeners are not currently satisfied with what's on the radio now. (isn't that what your ratings tell you?). As for that smallish fraction that IS unhappy? These are the iPod owners, my friends. They can skip YOUR music mix and program their own.
There is low awareness amongst consumers in the new HD Radio broadcasting. According to a survey dated August 8, 2007 by Bridge Ratings, when asked the question, "Would you buy an HD radio in the next two months?" only 1.0% responded "yes".[28] Some engineers have also expressed distrust or dislike of the new system.[29][30]
HD Radio technology is a factory-installed feature on all BMW and MINI vehicles. Ford, Hyundai and Volvo have announced that they will include the technology in 2009 vehicles. In addition, a variety of aftermarket radios are available to replace or upgrade current car radios. As of November 2007, a stereo HD Radio component that can be linked into an existing home stereo system, such as the Sangean HDT-1X, costs approximately $250 for the tuner alone, without its own amplifier or speakers.
Most of the first generation HD Radio tuners have been noted as being very insensitive, making reception problematic. The HD Radio signal is 1/100th the power of a station's analog signal. Due to its relative weakness, the HD Radio signal will sometimes drop out and the receiver will revert to analog mode. This can be especially problematic in fringe areas, where the digital signal may frequently be lost. If the listener is tuned to a secondary (HD2, HD3, etc.) channel, then any time the digital signal fades out, the sound will momentarily "blank out" until reception is restored. In addition it has been noted that the analog section of some tuners displays poor reception capabilities compared to older non-digital models.
HD Radio requires that consumers buy new hardware. New radios. Not since the dawn of our industry have we needed to drive sales of hardware. But we are content providers. And we own the pipes. We deal with a distribution channel that’s already in every car, workplace, and home – it’s universal. We don’t know – and haven’t needed to know - how to sell radios. And if you think selling these radios is as simple as “getting behind the effort,” talking it up, and handing out free samples, please stop taking the brown acid now.
No commercials? Commercials: Now there’s a listener problem. But HD Radio won’t help us there.
Data channels for services such as traffic, news, and weather? Those services are already on the market and will be commonplace by the time HD Radio is widely available. Besides, how many traffic, news, and weather channels does one market need?
But Radio is “Free”! Indeed it is. But time and again consumers prove they’re willing to pay for what they value. After all, water is free yet people buy the expensive bottled stuff every day – more than $8.3 billion in 2003 alone. And that’s in spite of evidence proving that what comes from a bottle is no better than what flows from the tap.
Besides, just try telling folks HD Radio is free in the same breath you tell them a new radio costs $200 dollars far more then a sat radio reciever.
There’s a logic that says because Satellite is nipping at Radio’s heels we must take action to be more like Satellite Radio. This logic ignores the fact that becoming “more like” Satellite means becoming redundant to Satellite Radio. And being redundant to Satellite Radio means being an also-ran with no significant positioning advantage and doing it much, much later than Satellite. Yahoo isn’t good at being eBay, Buy.com isn’t good at being Amazon, and Radio won’t be good at being Satellite.
Satellite Radio is a coherent brand, the same nationwide. HD Radio will be different in every market, depending on the programming decisions made in that market.
That means that Satellite Radio is selling one product but HD Radio is selling as many products as we have markets.
How do you sell a technology that is different everywhere you sell it? Answer: You can’t. You can only sell the content on it. That adds a sizable quantity of confusion to the mix, and the more confusing the product the less consumers will pay attention to it. And the less attention they pay to it, the less apt they are to adopt it.
DONT LIE TO THE PUBLIC ANONYMOUS CUM DUMPSTER!!!!!! DONT BE A TOOL!!!!
Well, Anon...there you are again. I never realized that you had that much time on your hands. In case you didnt notice, this site is for sat rad, not hd radio. Second, if I cared in the least about it, I would research it and buy it. Gladly, I dont give a rats ass. I hated radio for what it was, shitty. I will not being buying HD becuase it will be shitty to the 10th power. I dont care about local bullshit nor the ads associated with it. So, the way I see it, youre wasting lots of time on here for no reason. Its like regular radio, if you dont like whats on, change the station, if you dont want it, dont buy it. Youre just slinging your shit on the wrong website. And third, if you were in front of me...I woulndt even waste my time telling you to fuck off. Have a nice day. TESTICLE RADIO’S “ADVANCE TO THE REAR!”
Decline in Terrestrial Radio Audience
In an average week, 230 million Americans tune in to traditional radio. A large audience to be sure, but one in sharp decline from just five years ago. During the heady days of radio consolidation during the late 90s, stations increased their spot loads and promotional clutter. Listeners got annoyed, resulting in lower AQH ratings and time listening. During this same period, new on-demand devices, like MP3 players, were introduced and gained popular momentum. According to Billboard Radio Monitor, the number of ears listening [to terrestrial radio] every day has slowly slipped to about what it was in 1994. The audience of 18- to 24-year olds, a demographic particularly beloved by advertisers, has fallen nearly 22% since 1999. The sharp decline in radio advertising revenue reflects this change: In the radio expansion period of 1996-2000, total radio revenue (excluding network radio) grew 12%. Yet from 2000-2004, the increase was a meager .3%.
