XM Satellite Radio has announced that it will acquire WCS Wireless, which owns wireless licenses in the 10 megahertz frequency bands which happen to be adjacent to XM’s satellite radio service. This would enable XM Satellite Radio to offer additional multimedia services like data and video services. Others are reporting that this deal could nearly double the amount of programming XM can offer (including additional multilanguage channels)

It’s an all-stock deal for 5.5 million shares, valued at around $200 million. Both XM and Sirius may have to make more acquisitions to address competitive threats in the coming months.
