XM updates channels for XM Radio Online and DirecTV

XM Radio Online channel updateXM has updated the channel lineup for its XM Radio Online internet radio service and the channels that play through the DirecTV offering.

Starting today, XM Radio Online has added on an expansive offering including Radio Disney, BBC World Service, CNN, C-Span Radio, FOX News Talk, ESPN Radio, NHL Home Ice, PGA TOUR Network, and XM Sports Nation.

At the same time, gone from the XM Radio Online channel lineup are The Torch, Special X, Fuego, Luna, Music Lab, The Flow and On the Rocks. DirecTV will also no longer air The Torch, Special X, Fuego and Luna. These channels haven't been on the satellites for years.

It seems as if XM is attempting to make it's online offering more in-line with its satellite-based offering (though The Agenda, Ngoma and World Zone still survive on XMRO). This could be an attempt to cut costs, both in programming as well as in costs associated to royalty fees to SoundExchange. Or it might be in preparation for a new device with internet radio capabilities, though that's purely dreams and speculation.

Whatever the reasons, the new channels to XM Radio Online are definitely a huge improvement.

XM Lineup Change

Whatever the reasons, the new channels to XM Radio Online are definitely a huge improvement.
That's a matter of opinion. As someone who only listens to music, I think replacing a number of distinctive music channels (especially On the Rocks!) with talk channels is a huge step backwards....

It's unfortunate... but most of the channels that had been on the satellites at one time, and have only been available online lately were only small shells of their former selves. We all know the genius work that Lou Brutus put into Special X before he turned to Fungus and Special X became online-only. I never listened to OTR, but I know that some of the folks that did were not very happy at what it became when it went online-only. Oh well... progress has a price, I suppose...

I'm going to miss On The Rocks and Music Lab. That stinks they were dropped, and I have no idea why they did this, other than Ryan's theory about the internet enabled radio...

ahahahahahaha i fucking get it. opie and anthony suck! wow. thats amazing. really.... where is howard today? fucking robin in the wallet? watching artie eat himself to death? feeding the horse?

WE FUCKING GET IT DROP IT GODDAMNIT NOT EVERYTHING HAS TO FUCKING BE O AND A AND HOWARDS. JESUS FUCKING CHRIST.

This could be an attempt to cut costs, both in programming as well as in costs associated to royalty fees to SoundExchange. Or it might be in preparation for a new device with internet radio capabilities, Or it might be that Nate found his backbone and decided to tell Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin to take his "merge" scheme and shove it up his a**, Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin isn't gonna screw xm to line his pockets one last time. though that's purely dreams and speculation.

RED ALERT WE SUCK!!!
On June 26, 2008, during their broadcast, Opie announced that the show was in "red alert mode" and that an announcement would be made later that could affect all of the loyal listeners. Apparently, the radio show jocks had not received paychecks for the last two months. Furthermore, the situation for renewing the contracts of the jocks was still unclear.

Hey Stern fucko Zombies, wouldn't it be great if 202 was taken off both the satellites and Online too? in fact, just take both of Howard's channels off too. Just fire both Howard and O and A and that'll shut you fuckers up!

blah blah blah

Special X was a very well researched and very well mixed channel. An amazing collection of the greatest hits of bizarre. A great deal of work went into its content and it really showed. I thought it was brilliant and highly entertaining. I hope Special Xmas will continue as a holiday tradition again this year. Many thanks to XM for offering it. I hope they will reconsider, but I can certainly understand since it reaches a very small (but very grateful) audience. Maybe one of the Clear Channel channels will pick up those William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy classics.

I'll echo the rationale sentiments regarding the loss of On The Rocks.

XM isn't about diversity and good music, it's about the perception of increasing subscriptions and revenues.

The bottom line is that On the Rocks wasn't taking up any satellite bandwidth, it's Internet Only. So how does this interfere with the overall offering?

The kicker is that XM KEEPS the sappy programming of "Escape." I can only imagine how small that listening audience is.

I'll pay for a subscription again when better programming returns.

ESPN Radio on Directv as well as xm online would be great. Stiletto looking even better.

Peter "I'll pay for a subscription again when better programming returns."

Peter, with HD Radio and internet radio you most likely will never have to pay for crap satradio again, sad since satradio had so much potential which bad management and arrogance and greed killed.

I have DirecTV. I do not see BBC World Service on there. Is this online only!

World Zone and Ngoma are programmed by Worldspace, so as long as it's around, I bet we'll still have those two.

The agenda is just a loop of a show, like Artist Confidential is (Ch 3).

Having the other online exclusive channels go is definitely a loss. Used to be that at least small niche channels that had once gotten me to subscribe in the first place could survive online. While these were automated and gutted shadows of what they once were it is still sad to see them go.

One more nail in my subscription coffin. No point in paying for a slightly better version of FM, when I can load up my own I-Pod with stuff I want to hear. It will be just as boring and predictable as most XM and Sirius channels.

Can someone please tell me why XM3 (the Artist Confidential station on XMRO) has been repeating the Jewel Artist Confidential over and over for the last month? Is this what they normally do on XM3 (repeat one broadcast for weeks)? I'd like to hear some of the ACs I've missed, but every time I tune in, it's Jewel. Any ideas?

Thanks XM for dropping Special X (again!!). Truely Lee Abrams vision disappeard when he left and this merger has left us with a product whose goal is to be better then FM .... not a hard goal. Great job sat-rad, you've come a long way .... Chances are my subscription is dropped when the merger details are final. Having Karmazin take control of XM is like having McDonalds talking over a fine steak restaurant; Big Macs sell better but they're still crap.

0.0 is just as stale as HOO HOO....

LOL HD Radio. Good one.

I wonder if this means no "Special Xmas" this year as well. If so, that totally sucks!

Thanks to Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin for yet another mess we call the satradio industry. Come on Nate stop this sh*t. Melvin Alan "Mel" Karmazin doesn't deserve xm, and he sure doesn't deserve the opportunity to kill xm with his "merge" scheme all in the name of lining his pockets one last time.

I miss Lee. He championed these stations, and since he's gone, it just follows that they'd be removed.

Time to watch some more WKRP reruns...

Even if this merger is killed, XM has already screwed the pooch. All the unique channels were relegated to online-only, and now are gone completely. Meanwhile Flytunes/Accuradio has 375 Channels. Including sub-genres of sub-genres if you're into that sort of thing. And it's free.

"FCC Turns Down C3SR & NAB Requests. Case Closed!"

"The issue of interoperability and lack of candor it would seem are off the table, which should clear the commission to vote in favor of the merger. This has been a sticking point for weeks, as allegations and accusations have been flung at Sirius and Xm executives, regarding interoperability. Mr. Rehr does go on (and on and on) reiterating his position, but it appears that his repeated allegations are now falling on deaf ears."

No more Music Lab? Frak! That's what used to get me through the day at work ... bunch of jacktards over at XM.

First they nixed The Flow and Luna from my car and killed the joy rides I used to take to unwind. They added The Heat back then which just plays the same commercial crap thats on FM. OH BUT WAIT, they made these "online exclusives" (euphemism for "yea we know we screwed you but we don't want you to leave just yet. Here is a substitute") so at least I could chill at home and listen on the internet right? NAY-NAY- they had to nix that too.

I guess playing unique music is no longer neccessary because they have enough subscribers to be another "industry". Shame on me for thinking something good would last. Shame on me for thinking that a merger between XM and Sirius would actually improve programming (i.e. put the online exclusives back on satellite in some form) . I guess I'll seek out what I want on the only viable medium with any real diversity left- the internet.

LUNA is gone, what is left! To me, XM=LUNA, without LUNA, XM=nothing--I am dropping it.

While I'm happy that XM is adding some talk channels to the online service I am disappointed that XM is subtracting some music channels. They should follow the lead of AOL radio and have speciality channels online even if they don't have them on the satellites. I also hope that XM rewrites their online music player with Silverlight. The current online player is lousy on a Macintosh.

I was so disappointed when I checked my DirecTV menu yesterday and saw that Fuego was gone. I listen to it almost exclusively at times. The only other two I love are WorldZone and Aguila. I don't understand how they can just kill the only Reggaeton channel they have without replacing it.

shut up and play music!
