XM vs SIRIUS: The ill-informed comparison
In a duopoly, such as that in the satellite radio industry, it's a given that the media will do a "versus" comparison from time to time... many of which I ignore. They're usually the same crap and ultimately give you a wishy-washy conclusion ("if you like Howard Stern, go with Sirius - but if you like Oprah, go with XM!" yeah, great, thanks).
But this beauty on Associated Content caught my eye. First off, I should at least applaud the author for making a choice (Sirius won) - and the comparison is based on personal experience - but there's a few holes and I'm going to exploit here. So let's get to it shall we?
"XM has a bad habit of repeating songs. I may end up hearing one song five times in one day within a few hours period. With Sirius, that isn’t the case."
...has anyone experienced this? Maybe I'm listening to different channels than this author.
"Furthermore, I do not like the way XM names its stations."
...ok, I need to agree here. While cute, many of the channels are just too ambigious for the newbie to instantly know what kind of music is being played. But that's also what the neighborhoods are for - if you're in the Rock neighborhood, you kind of know what you're going to get (take a guess... Rock, good job). That said, Sirius isn't necessary innocent of this either. "Buzzsaw" and "Area 33" are really self-explainitory either. But aside from all that... is this really friggin big deal?
"Sirius satellite radio broadcasts a lot clearer than XM, especially in relation to the talk channels. People’s voices come across a lot smoother and can be easier understood than XM, which tends to be fuzzy."
...huh? Bandwidth - and subsequently sound quality - varies from channel to channel. I wonder if she's comparing a traffic channel to Howard 100. There's crappy sounding talk channels on both services. Sorry, that's the truth.
"It’s true that XM has 90+ music channels, 10+ sports channels, 20+ news and talk channels, along with a few traffic channels."
...90+ eh? Try 69.
"Along the same lines, if you will be doing a lot of listening to talk shows, Sirius has more of the popular shows such as “Discovery,” “Howard Stern,” and “Martha Stewart.” What celebrity talk show does XM have? The “Oprah Winfrey“ show. Sirius also has “Playboy Radio.” What does XM have that could compete with that? Nothing."
...she counts "Discovery" as a popular show? Nothing about HGTV or Food Network on XM? What about Dale Earnhart Jr? Jimmie Johnson? Ellen Degeneres? Cal Ripken Jr? Tyra Banks? Oprah's not even on yet!
If you're going to do a comparison, at least do a bit of research. Basing it on personal preference is fine - hell, that's the deciding factor for everyone - just try and give it a fair shake though. Want my bottom line? Fine, here it is: if you like Howard Stern, go with Sirius - but if you like Oprah, then go with XM.

"Sirius satellite radio broadcasts a lot clearer than XM..."
I can't really speak for XM, but I often have annoying drop outs and stutters with Sirius. Very aggravating.

But.. but... i don't like Stern or Oprah..... I like Opie and Anthony. She did a nice job of not mentioning them whatsoever as a "talk show". And here i was thinking that they reached more people in the US than most talk shows out there. Silly me.

From an Inno point of view: I have drop-outs when I'm moving, but only at certain times during my bus ride home to NJ (Turnpike), usually when I don't have a clear view of the south and there isn't a repeater that's close enough. For the most part, I can listen all the way from my office to my house with little interruption.
Walking around NYC or at my office, the reception is usually at full strength and only drops out when my antenna moves or my hand ends up in front of it (on the same side as my mouse).

I half-agree about the channel naming, but that's what the printed guides are for - with *either* service.
I only wish XM would pick a format an go with it on each of their channels. Boneyard (I thought) was supposed to be all 80's hair metal and everything of that ilk. 'Squizz' is supposed to be 'new' rock. How is it I'm hearing 'Bombtrack' from RATM this morning on Squizz and Wolfmother songs on da Bone?
Fred, Ethel & Lucy are equally muddled in their playlists - 'alternative hits', 'classic alternative', 'deep alternative classic hits' (you get the point). IMO 2 of these channels should be combined into 1, and let it be a 'Big Tracks' of sorts for alternative rock - let the remaining channel play a mix of lesser-known alternative stuff, and be done with it.
Then make Boneyard a haven for all hard rock - AC/DC, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Wolfmother, Limp Bizkit, etc. Doesn't matter if it's new or old.
Squizz should probably remain 'as is', but don't claim to play 'new rock' if you're giving me stuff off a Rage album that's 10 years old.
Then take the void left by combining the 2 alt. channels and make a pure 'hair metal' channel - believe me, there's a market for it.

Forgot to add I'm also tired of the personality-driven comparisons.
I'd prefer a sports angle when lining up the 2 services, but I realize not everyone is into sports. Like Ryan, I'm still waiting for an in-depth breakdown of the music offerings.
I'm guessing that's just laziness on the part of the journalist, however. One would have to take the better part of 6 months to honestly get a feel for (and an opinion on) the playlists of each station. But editors don't want to wait that long when it comes to cutting-edge technology, do they?
So ultimately that's probably why it always comes down to the personalities. If I didn't necessarily *care* about Stern, O&A or anyone else on the two services, I'd probably just go with whomever offered the better hardware.
But that's the geek in me.

To me, the traffic channels on XM are easier to understand than Sirius'. The compression Sirius uses seems to leave 'artifacts' that annoy me.
I don't think XM repeats songs too much... unless you're on 20-22, 26 or 30. And that's the point of those channels. Unfortunately, I've been unable to find any Sirius channels (when using my mom's car) that play two songs in a row that I like.
Some of XM's rock channels (which is my preferred style) seem to overlap too much, and I agree with Pete above... too muddled. The old Ethel only played Hit Alternative Rock, the way I liked it, and I miss that. The playlists on the rock channels are very diverse, to a point where I sometimes get frustrated trying to find something I've heard of.

on the sirius side, I've gone through 3 antennas so far with my s50. I'm a bit hard on them but I don't think they should be so easily destroyable. Maybe a retractable cord or something.
Nothing is wrong with my S50. I know what I paid for.
The music channels are acceptable as well. I'm not picky in that aspect. They do occaisionally replay the hot song more often than I'd like but they play the classics as well.
I wish they did more poker radio outside of the WSOP.

Once again, everybody is different. Before my tape deck died, I always thought XM sounded far cleaner overall than Sirius. Now that I have to run both through FM, I don't notice the difference as much. It just goes to show how much your equipment can affect the sound quality. As for rock music, I find I can usually listen to Sirius stations for a long time before I tire of them; with XM, I almost always end up flipping around. Fred/Ethel/Lucy TO ME don't seem to be focused enough. That said, each service has its strengths, and I love both too much to consider dropping either.

"XM has a bad habit of repeating songs."??????
We are still compairing Sirius and XM right? I am ready to delete all of my Sirius S-Seeks due to excessive beeping. Sirius is getting better at this to their great credit. However, compaired to XM they repeat like crazy. The idiot who wrote this must have kept XM on the top 20 on 20.

Heh. Or any of the pop stations for that matter. That's why it's called 'pop' music.

Its like this woman grabbed each radio and listened to it for a week. You have to actually expierence these babies. Live with them, cuddle them, listen to them. She got the number of xm music stations wrong for fucks sake.
There is way to much content to just thumb through.

Yup, no mentio of Opie and Anthony. Not mentioned here either. Such hate for them and such LOVE for Stern.
Now here this: Stern wil NOT hire everybody who plugs him no matter how much you kis his a$$!
Anyway, Opie and Anthony have more listeners than Stern can have to who cares what this article says.

Per the NPD data released today for July retail sales, the author is not alone in her opinions.

I'm not so sure. She has an XM radio but Sirius on Dish, according to the article. Sirius sounds a lot better on Dish but not on Sirius's PNP's, so I think the author may have made a mistake.

I guess she wasn't listening when Sirius Octane... a station that's supposed to play "in your face" music... played Alice in Chains - Rooster twice in less than 12 hours. That station was more repetitive than an FM rock station. I drove the final 3 of 6 hours in silence.

sirius' talk channels do have better SQ than XM's. Sirius sounds way clearer than XM's. just go to your local bby and put xm on FOX, then Sirius on Fox, now press the red button to change services.
XM's traffic and weather is way more compressed than sirius'. XM's traffic and weather sounds like a robot. again, do the same test as above at your local best buy.
the music SQ is the same for both.

This may help with comparing warranty service.
My 2 cents about Sirius warranty replacement, a bad experience.
I have been a happy Sirius subscriber up until 2 months ago. I have Sirius in my car, which was given to me for free with its purchase. I was very happy with it, so I purchased a Sirius StarMate ST2 Replay for my father. He bought the home kit, and started having issues with reception on the Sirius StarMate ST2 Replay. After a few tests with his unit next to my car, we realized that it should be working properly, as my car was recieving signal correctly.
NOW THE FUN BEGINS!
After searching for a working number, as the one in the warranty book (888-869-5690) was wrong, I got a live warranty representitive. The telephone number for Sirius warranty is 866-257-7726 Monday through Saturday 8-10 EST I think. Sara was friendly an explained that they did not have any availible units to replace the defective one, and they would call me in two weeks. They also stated they would put the account associated to that SID on hold, as not to be billed.
2 weeks go by, then 3, and them my wife calls. "I can't login to Sirius online to listen to the radio at work" First thought, girls and technology, a fine match! (ladies don't hate me, but it's true). I tried to log in myself, and was notified about an issue with my account not be paid. Wonderful. Well I needed to call them anyway to find out about the defective Sirius StarMate ST2 Replay, so here I go. I will email them instead, busy at work, below is the reply:

SIRIUS Satellite Radio, The Best Radio on Radio.
OK, I thought the account was put on hold already. I will call in now. This time they couldn't even give my the old "we'll call you in 2 weeks" lie, but they did credit the account $20 dollars, and correct the temporary hold on the account.
NOW THE FUNNY PART,
If you read in the email i posted above they mention a "free radio offer", interesting....
At the end of the above phone call the gentleman mentions, "hey, would you like to here about our free radio offer?" Go ahead Mr. customer service savant, enlighten me. (see I am getting frustrated even typing this!)
Long story short, they will give you a free radio if you prepay 6 months, and buy a home kit or boombox.
Hey, I wonder if the free radio they offer is the one I have been waiting for, and by reading some other posts what others have been waiting for also.
AND GUESS WHAT, they offer an Sirius StarMate ST2 Replay for free!
Conclusions:
I find it interesting how they can offer the radio I have been waiting for, under the "free radio program", but are unable to replace my defective unit. I know it is important to try an increase the subscriber base, but isn't it a catch 22 that by making current subscribers unhappy. I guess in the long run shareholders/market looks at new activations mostly. Ahhh, corporate America at its finest.....

It would be cool to see what song that I last heard so I know who the artist was. Oh wait I had to do that on regular radio because I didn't know but sat radio provides a service to artists.

Ryan, I agree with you on many of your points. This lady is clueless on many points:
----------------
XM has more repetition? Yes, if she's listening to 20-on-20 or Hitlist. But then again it has been pointed out that ANY pop-music channel will have repetition.
XM clearly has deeper playlists overall.
-------------------
She spoke little of sports, but forgot to mention that NASCAR and NHL swap services in 2007. So NASCAR fans may want to buy Sirius, not XM.
------------------
I laughed at the "Discovery" channel as great talk. It's a great channel, but it's no Stern or Stewart. Why no mention of XM counterparts such as O&A or Tyra Banks?
-------------------
Better sound quality on Sirius? That's certainly up for grabs at this point, considering these two have gone through a channel count war several months ago. Neither service has good sounding talk channels.
-------------------
Reception-wise, same rule applies: it depends on where you are, no overall winner here either.
-------------------
As to overall "winner", there isn't one. It's up to what you want to listen too, but having the service(s) for one week doesn't do justice whatsoever for a real comparison. You need a good month of listening for a decent idea of what they offer.

Rich,
Don't call me out when you don't have the facts. Your data is not so much incorrect as it is incomplete.
I was on a trip for business to Kentucky on April 10, 2006 where I heard the song played at approximately 7:30 pm. When I got up in the morning to leave the hotel it played again somewhere between 7:00 and 8:00 am on April 11, 2006. I have the receipts from the trip, so I know the dates, but I did not record the exact times.
Now that my polite rebuttal is out of the way... that data is obviously missing a lot assmunch. You're telling me it's played almost everyday except only once in March and never in the first half of April.
Don't try to make your flaky information look like the be-all end-all dumbass. And not only are you WRONG... but Alice in Chains - Rooster is hardly:
Pure, high-powered hard rock that's loud, uncensored and in your face.
as Octane is described on Sirius' website.

I apologize for embarrassing you Chipper, but no one likes a liar. Nothing you speak or write from this day to eternity will ever have any credibility.
You might as well commit suicide or change your alias.

i bet she didn't even know that XM had Playboy Radio but it was so unpopular that they canned it. Playboy Radio isn't a very big draw.
it sounds like she enjoys Sirius more, which is fine. but it doesn't sound like she compared both services objectively. there's definitely a bias toward Sirius there.

"XM has more repetition? Yes, if she's listening to 20-on-20 or Hitlist. But then again it has been pointed out that ANY pop-music channel will have repetition.
XM clearly has deeper playlists overal"
Why is this clear? Please explain.

lol, should I be worried that Rich says I have no credibility? I think not. That is more of a compliment than an insult coming from him.

Chipper, give up bro. He got you. The more you reply the more guilty you look. Rich is the man.

Dude, an 8 year old can talk shit better than Rich. I remember the female DJ on their telling the same stupid ass joke about a fortune cookie twice that first day before Rooster was played. Something about going to a Chinese restaurant and having the fortune cookie tell her that she's gonna owe them like $6 or something. It was totally lame, kinda like Rich.

Chipper, that site is very, VERY accurate. It was offline sporadically during March and April, but it has been online ever since then. If you know a song that's "been repeated twice in less than 12 hours on Octane" since April, then post it -- it will be really easy to confirm or disprove. Until you do this, I'd have to say that you got owned by Rich.

STILL WAITING FOR SAT RADIO FAN TO TELL US HOW ITS CLEAR THAT XM HAS A DEEPER PLAY LIST.

Who gives a crap about talk radio. Sure it can be good from time to time but what I want to hear on my radio is good music. The only thing I really want to know is which plays the best alternative music?
So far I am leaning towards XM. From my online trial I can always find a good station on XM. I enjoy LUCY, THE LOFT, ETHEL, SQUIZZ, FRED and similar stations. O like some hip hop and reggaeton as well occasionally.
From what I have been able to see from both trials, XM offers a better selection of alternative music.
