The Newseum, the Washington DC museum devoted to news and journalism, played host to XM's POTUS '08 channel on Friday, during the grand opening of the Newseum's $450 million building on Pennsylvania Avenue.
The POTUS '08 (ch 130) anchors could be found broadcasting live from an XM broadcast booth on the main floor of the museum as thousands of tourists poured through the doors (and picked up XM swag and XMRO promotions along the way).
The Newseum is sponsored by the Freedom Forum, a nonpartisan foundation dedicated to "free press, free speech and free spirit for all people." The original Newseum was opened in 1997 in nearby Rosslyn, Virginia., but the Freedom Forum decided to move the Newseum across the Potomac River to Washington, and closed the original facility in 2002.
The new 643,000-square-foot Newseum has an enormous "window on the world" looking onto Pennsylvania Avenue and the National Mall. Overlooking the street is a giant panel with the 45 words of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution carved in stone. Inside, the Newseum has seven floors of displays, 15 theaters, a dozen major galleries, two broadcast studios, and an interactive newsroom.
One of the cooler displays is the "Today's Front Pages Gallery," where more than 500 newspapers transmit their front pages electronically to the Newseum each day. Additional front pages are displayed outside the Newseum on Pennsylvania Avenue. You can also see them here.
Another cool exhibits? There's eight 12-foot-high concrete sections of the Berlin Wall, each weighing about three tons. And a three-story East German guard tower from Berlin stands nearby.
Pictured above: U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., interviewed by Linda Douglass, National Journal contributing editor and host of the POTUS '08 show "National Journal On Air."
Check out more photos after the jump...

The Newseum is the second-dumbest idea this year, right after the Pope Channel
I remember going to the Newseum at age 12, and back then they were cool, but not as cool as they are now. The "Today's Papers" section was actual papers.
I've got to admit that I really don't get it. I can't understand why anyone would want to see a museum dedicated to newsgathering.
btw if you plan on being a tourist in Washington forget this waste of time and go over to Georgetown and see the Exorcist stairs. It is really cool to watch people there. Some really freak out. It's completely free and you can usually find a parking space on the street near the top of the stairs. They are located very near the DC end of Key bridge.
Sorry for the double post but I forgot to throw in that the admission to the Newseum is $20. That's terrible!
The Nauseum. Will they show how ratings driven and biased the "news" has become?
Nice, I've got to checkout their new facility. The former one near my old office in Rosslyn was pretty cool. Thought it was weird that they'd totally go dark for a few years while building the new space.
"The Newseum is the second-dumbest idea this year, right after the Pope Channel"
Beg to differ "The Newseum is the THRID-dumbest idea this year, right after the Pope Channel" the number one "dumbest idea this year" and last year is a "merge" MONOPOLY of Sirius/xm
Actually, they still have the physical display of front pages - 80 papers inside and 50 papers outside. The complete daily set is digital.
actually the dumbest idea this year is letting you in orbitcast.com with your stupid, insufficent evidence about the merger!
Actually the dumbest idea this year was CBS reupping the 0.0 wacky morning zoo. Mel will take care of this though, and next year they will be terrestrial "exclusive". Hah.
yea I went to DC this past Easter and unfortunately this museum still wasn't opened yet. But this is def going to be an awesome museum for someone such as myself studying journalism in college.
On second thought think Lou thinking he can post with those which know how to think trumps everything as the dumbest idea this year or any other year. Lou = blind, ignorant, satrad fanboy who has no clue about proven business ideas like direct competition and how it both helps corporations become better and in turn is positive for the consumer.

The POTUS channel is a total waste of money--these folks could be interviewed on XM's public radio--I mean other than when there is a primary vote who cares most of the time. They fly all around the country wasting XM's money when they could just interview pols in DC in their studio and interview local newspaper folks on the phone when there is a primary in there state. They nedd to have an anchor? What a waste of our money.
